4.0 out of 5 stars Go Backstage, December 8, 2006
This review is from: The Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass (Paperback)
Sixteen-year-old Eva Ortiz dazzles viewers weekly on a hit television sitcom. Her younger sister, Jessica, does not have any acting aspirations, preferring to led an average life off-camera. When accidents start happening on the set and things start to go missing, Jess decides it's up to her to solve the mysteries.

Jess often has pratfalls, but she also has a very big heart. In fact, the entire family is loving and supportive. Though she is a rising star, Eva is very down-to-earth and likable.

A quick read which is refreshing clean, Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass is suitable for young readers who want a little mystery, a little glamour, and a lot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor abounds in this story of smooth detective work., October 8, 2006
This review is from: The Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass (Paperback)
Mary Wilcox's THE HOLLYWOOD SISTERS: BACKSTAGE PASS tells of a sister who's become a popular TV teen figure - and of a plot to tell lies about her to ruin her career. Its up to her sister to take on the case and foil the plot: only trouble is, there are too many possible suspects. Humor abounds in this story of smooth detective work.

I picked up this book for a quick read. It ended up that I couldn't put it down and wished the next book was out for release. The family in the story draws you in. I would recommend it for anyone, it's great that you can share it with your teen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny book, August 30, 2006
This review is from: The Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass (Paperback)
I read this book and really liked it. It was funny and I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what happened next. I hear that more books are coming out with the same girls. I'll be reading those too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cotton candy, November 17, 2007
This review is from: The Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass (Paperback)
Jessica's sister Eva is the teenager in Hollywood at the moment. She's turned her small role on the TV show Two Sisters into a starring role. She's got offers for more roles coming her way. But she's also getting some bad press - the kind that only an insider could hand off to the gossip columnist. Who on set is selling Eva out? Jessica is determined to sleuth around and discover the culprit.

Backstage Pass was a cute, fun, fluffy read. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes glimpses of a sitcom in the making. My main complaint was that the boyfriend/girlfriend relationship between the main character and one of the actors seemed sudden and unrealistic - a bit laughable. The writing, by no means spectacular, moved the story along at a good pace and gave me characters to cheer for. A good beach read, especially for those interested in acting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, November 27, 2006
This review is from: The Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass (Paperback)
Thirteen-year-old Jessica Ortiz can't quite decide if she's blessed or cursed. On the one hand, there's the fact that her sixteen-year-old older sister, Eva, is the breakout star of the new television hit, Two Sisters. On the other hand, there's the fact that the fame, fortune, and money that come from having an older sister who is a Hollywood star seems to be driving her family slightly crazy.

Oh sure, they now live in a Spanish casa, a house with a library full of fake books, a kitchen that comes complete with a cook and maid, and even a pool. There's even a bulldog named Petunia for Jessica's very own pet, even though her parents had been previously avoiding the issue of pets for years. All of that sounds great, on the surface. But under that surface, though, is the very real fact that someone is attempting to sabotage Eva on the set of Two Sisters.

What starts out for Jessica as Project Stop Slander soon turns into an honest-to-goodness whodunit, as she attempts to find out who is leaking bad publicity pictures of her sister to the press, is stealing her sister's designer wardrobe, and who also seems to be sending her threatening text messages on her cell phone. All of this, while her sister, Eva the star, works with her publicity agent, Keiko, to control the damage as it occurs.

What a total delight, and a wonderful surprise! I can honestly say that I didn't know what to expect when I picked up a copy of BACKSTAGE PASS. What I found, though, was a great, quick read with down-to-earth characters, wonderful dialogue, and, even though the story is set in Hollywood, a truly believable plot. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether you're a lover of mysteries, a middle school student, or an older, reluctant reader looking for something that won't take up a lot of time. I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the second book in THE HOLLYWOOD SISTERS series, The Hollywood Sisters: On Location (The Hollywood Sisters), which is scheduled to be released in March of 2007. Kudos to Ms. Wilcox for a great new series!
