Biography

Rockabilly three piece, The Stray Cats were formed in 1979 in Long Island by Brian Setzer, Leon Drucker and James McDonnel. They cite their influences as Bill Haley and the Sun Records label. The band relocated to the UK to take advantage of the rockabilly revival in the late 70s.

The band released their debut album Stray Cats in 1981, making the top 40 in the singles charts with "Runaway Boys" and… Read more in Amazon's Stray Cats Store

4.0 out of 5 stars From beginning to the End, January 3, 2001

This review is from: Hollywood Strut (Audio CD)
Here are the kings of Rock-a-billy at their most raw. The first five songs are from 1990, Unplugged and well past their prime, it's hilarious (Setzer blows the intro to Strut, and is admonished with "20 years of playing it & you still can't get it right!). The rest of the fifteen tracks are from a show at Hollywood's Roxy, recorded in 1981. The crowd is in the palm of their hands, as the group blisters through an extremly hot set. The mix is flawed, I suspect the cd was recorded from vinyl, or an old analog tape(listen to the major flaw that interferes with "Double Talkin' Baby"). All in all this cd sounds like a bootleg, but WELL worth adding to your collection!

2.0 out of 5 stars only for die hard fans, January 1, 2010
This review is from: Hollywood Strut (Audio CD)
This disc, as the other reviewer said, sounds much like a bootleg. The thing is, some bootlegs sound very good. This one does not. I recall getting a similar sound quality on those little tape recorders that I brought to a college course to record a professor's lecture on those tiny audio cassettes. The first five tracks sound much better and it is fun to hear the band chatting and being very loose. Their covers of Buddy Holly's Oh Boy and Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues are fun but not really all that inspired.
After those 5 tracks, the disc's sound quality goes down the drain as the 'bootleg' concert comes. This disc is strictly for die hards who can't get enough of the band. I for one am happy with studio recordings where there was both inspiration and good (enough) sound quality.
