Not up to expectations
If you're a subscriber to Elle Decor (US); the majority of the homes featured are plucked from Elle Decor as well as Michael S. Smith's book Element of Style. I was totally disappointed as I expected more.

I bought "Hollywood Style" because I loved the author's earlier book on California cottages, and had enjoyed reading her work in the SF Chronicle years ago. This book delighted me because it's not at all what one would expect. The homes are lovely, luxurious but liveable. Many are positively modest by current standards. What they have in common is exquisite taste. I especially enjoyed seeing Rose Tarlow's home (and have now ordered her book too). This is a thoughtful, handsomely produced book with marvelous photos.

so perfect and idyllic,

Even if you do not particularly follow the Hollywood film star scene, this book offers a fascinating glimpse at some unique houses in Los Angeles. Mostly in Hollywood and the nearby suburbs. Each house also has a perfectly manicured garden, often with a pool.
The styles vary widely. As Saeks relates, several houses were designed by famous architects, like Schindler or Neutra. Everything seems so perfect and idyllic in the photos. Some houses, up in the hills, also have fantastic views of Los Angeles. The book shows that enough money can on occasion purchase the utmost in style. |
