Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2011 release from the British vocal trio who specialize in 1940s-style close harmony vocal music. This album is dedicated to the music that made Hollywood sparkle Includes 'Moon River', 'I Got Rhythm', 'Get Happy' and more. Decca.

From the Artist

As Stephanie notes, the Puppini Sisters' take on life is that "whenever we have a strong idea, we go for it" - this has extended to all parts of their fabulous career to date and has led to an album that not only spectacularly evokes a bygone era but also distils the Puppini ethos perfectly. Marcella adds "from the time we first started rehearsing in my kitchen to this day, we have always been guided by a desire to make music that makes us happy. That's our biggest appeal." Kate agrees as well, "We make music to make you smile and tap your feet. That's what this genre was always about and that's why we have so much fun making it our own."

The Puppini Sisters are the living embodiment of 1940s glamour, and Hollywood will take the listener right back to a more alluring time, where stars were stars and dreams are lived.

Described as "the Andrews Sisters on acid", the Anglo-Italian vocal trio the Puppini Sisters' sound and style are so steeped in the golden era of the silver screen that it's surprising it's taken this long for the concept of their fourth album, "Hollywood", to materialize.
An affectionate homage to the glamorous film stars of the '40s and '50s, its selection of show-stopping numbers from various classic musicals may be fairly predictable, but luckily, their new arrangements allow the retro-burlesque revivalists to make their own mark on the proceedings.
Judy Garland's signature number, "Get Happy", is transformed into a toe-tapping folksy hoedown, with its plucked banjo riffs, jaunty violins, and lolloping percussion; West Side Story's "I Feel Pretty" is turned into a charming Gallic waltz; while Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" is given an inventively haunting makeover, with an eerie theremin accompanying its sweeping strings and hushed ghostly harmonies.
Elsewhere, the group members showcase their bilingual skills on Brigitte Bardot's playful tongue-twister "Moi Je Joue" and the French version of The Godfather's "Speak Softly Love" ("Parle Plus Bas"), channel the spirit of Marilyn Monroe on a stylish rendition of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend", and provide just the right amount of sassiness for the infectious swing of Girl Crazy's "I Got Rhythm".
There are a few curve balls, such as the title track (the album's sole original composition), which could easily be mistaken for an old-fashioned jazz-hands number with its triumphant brass section and rumbling double bass, while Mika's "Grace Kelly" -- neatly fitting in with the cinematic theme -- is a clever more contemporary addition that best showcases their three-part doo wop harmonies.

The Puppini Sisters can sing like nobody's business. Got two of their cds as Christmas presents and then ordered the rest they have out. This new cd is just as good or better than the rest. Amazing harmony, humor, and easy on the eyes. I play a LOT of different music in my house/car..from heavy metal to Sinatra, but the Puppini Sisters are getting all the attention now. These ladies are fantasic and so is HOLLYWOOD. ( Playing 'Get Happy' is a fantastic way to start your day. )

This album opens with the only original song to be found here, which sets the theme and the mood for the rest of the album. There is a nice mix of tempos here, with classic ballads True love. Moon river and September song as well as the upbeat numbers that suit the Puppini sisters particularly well. Some songs have arrangements not that different to the originals, while others are more noticeably different.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend and I got rhythm are noticeably different from other versions of these songs, but the most striking track here is Get happy. The instrumental credits for this track include a guitanjo, a tambourine and even a Coke bottle, although I haven't figured out where the bottle fits in.

Two songs in French are featured, these being Moi Je Joue (a song originally recorded by Brigitte Bardot, and Parle plus bas, which is actually a French version of Speak softly love.

This was their four albums, and I also have their three previous albums. If forced to choose, their debut Betcha Bottom Dollar is probably the best, but all four are brilliant. I look forward to further releases from this trio.
