More About the Author

When I first started writing, I caught flack from potential agents and publishers because my stories didn't shamelessly copy Anne Rice -- the hip thing to do in the late 90's and early 2000's -- and nowadays, I'm told to hang it up because I don't write like Stephanie Meyer.

The vampire stories I write -- while taking regular forays into dark, bloody territory -- often have more in common with over-the-top action movies like Desperado, or profanely hilarious comedies like Clerks.

My characters aren't cardboard cut-outs, either -- they're PEOPLE who happen to be vampires, and as such, they'll act like you or I would in a given situation... and they don't always make the right choices. Nor are they all-knowing, all-powerful... because they're human.

Now, don't get me wrong -- I LOVE vampire fiction of all sorts, and Nancy Collins is my personal favorite vampire author! But to tell you the truth...

I can't write brooding, gothic prose to save my butt, and angsty teen drama makes me giggle. If I tried to fake it, it would totally suck, so instead I write action-packed vampire yarns full of swearing, tomfoolery, and my own observations about life. I want to make your heart pound with excitement, and I want you to laugh so hard you have to put the book down...

Which usually happens when you read "The Thing In Stacey's Garage," found in Sex, Blood, & Rock 'n Roll. I've had people from New Zealand to South Africa to Canada tell me that ridiculous, profanity-laden story brought them to tears of laughter, and it makes my day every time.

And really -- how often do you come across vampire fiction that makes you laugh yourself stupid?!

So while I'm advised to alter my stories in favor of whatever trend is popular in vampire fiction, I can't do it. That would be a betrayal of my heart and the readers who've stuck with me for over a decade through thick and thin. At the end of the day, it's YOU that keeps me inspired and keeps me working at this -- I'm not here to make the mainstream crowd happy... I want to make YOU happy.

So I do it all myself -- for us.

Writing the Hollywood Vampires stories -- and a few other projects -- is something I do out of love, not because I'm gonna get rich. I work a full-time "day-job" as a marketing consultant / copywriter, so that's what pays my bills. Now mind you, I'd LOVE to get rich doing writing vampire fiction -- but that's not my primary motivation...

I do this stuff because we both love it. Period.

Every e-mail, kind word, piece of fan art, or encouragement you send me is worth every hour of work I put into the Hollywood Vampires universe, and I'm hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lost Boys would be jealous ..., March 17, 2011
Party all night, play all day and leave the coffin in the basement. The Hollywood Vampires are here, and they're going to change the face of fiction! Each of the characters from Unholy War is presented in their own tale ... and in a way that makes them truly shine as INDIVIDUALS. Enter a whole new world, where the vampires are fun-loving characters that will win you over from the very first page. Rich characters gather your attention right away, draw you into their world and make you laugh until you swear you can't breathe ever again. Introspection, descriptive fight scenes, profanity, love and a brand of humor rarely found in the genre make this an unforgettable read that makes you cry for more when you turn the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the mist of vampires. . . . .., January 1, 2007
This review is from: Hollywood Vampires: Sex, Blood & Rock 'n Roll (Paperback)
Mr. Jones saying that "these aren't your mommy and daddy's vampires" is an understatement. I've known Mr. Jones before the raw genius of Hollywood vampires. And I'm here to tell you that his books are worth buying. Ever wonder what it's like to be immortal? Men and women have pondered this questions since the dawn of man. And since that dawn there has been vampires like Tommy and Stacy from the book. Blood sex and rock n' roll, is an ongoing answer to that question. It's also an answer to our selves. In other words live life don't just be a bystander on the wayside. This book has some of the most entertaining stories from Matt yet. I would also like to point out the awesome artwork by one Nathan Smith, offical artist of the Hollywood Vampires. Nathans's artwork is unique and in my opinion can't be duplicated. It's as thoughtful, refreshing, and one of a kind, as it gets.(Just like the author of the book, and his work in side.) So trust me, pick up this book. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent sophmore release, June 15, 2004

This review is from: Hollywood Vampires: Sex, Blood & Rock 'n Roll (Paperback)
I've been a big fan of Matt's for a long time, ever since I read his first book. His brand of vampire entertainment is witty and fresh, and this book continues with characters introduced in his first book.

Sex Blood and Rock 'n' Roll is a collection of 12 stories centering around the "lesser" main characters of Unholy War. Stacey, Donita, Katherine, Stephen, Wade, Dorian, and Tommy all take center stage in 11 of the 12 stories, and the last story brings closure to Unholy War with a brand new character. Add an intro to each story that explains the inspiration behind each of these stories, and you've got one entertaining read in your hands.

Overall, an awesome book. Very well worth the time it took to read it. Go check out Mr. Jones' website at hollywoodvampires.net, and keep up with the ever expanding universe.
