Book Description

August 28, 2002
Everyone who has ever thought about writing or working in Hollywood will want to read this book. These are the personal and often outrageous adventures of a veteran screenwriter who has worked extensively for the major studios, as well as with major directors such as Richard Donner and James Cameron. There are abundant writing lessons to be learned here, but "life" lessons, as well. In fact, this story is about "getting over" Hollywood, more than just "getting into" Hollywood. Readers looking past the material or superficial (e.g., celebrity) for something more meaningful in their lives, will find this book truly uplifting."If youre thinking of being a screenwriter, jamming all your possessions into a subcompact and driving cross-country, then it behooves you to read Carters experiences."Tim CliftonRenaissance Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Old College Roomate, October 31, 2003
By
DAVID S CARMICHAEL (TRYON, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hollywoodaholic: Confessions of a Screenwriter (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
Wayne and I were roomates during our college years at University of Miami. I personally watched him in the beginning as he focused on his dream, and can say that he tried as hard as anyone could to write and develop great screenplays. I was glad to see he has written a book of his experiences and can say it is truly revealing of an incidious industry, where talent does not always rise to the top. In hopes that you may read this, please contact me at "dscarmichael@alltel.net" Hope to hear from you.

David

5.0 out of 5 stars A writer comes of age., January 29, 2003
This review is from: Hollywoodaholic: Confessions of a Screenwriter (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
When you read between the sometimes funny, often poignant lines of "Hollywoodaholic," you realize that it is actually a coming of age story. The protagonist, the wayward screenwriter Wayne Carter, through the use of letters written to his loved ones over a 20 year period, shows us how he learned and grew from the ups and downs, loves and losses of his life in the movie business. As you read his letters, you can see his progress as a writer, a man, a friend, a son, a husband, and ultimately, a father. While striving for something just out of reach, he learns over time to trust God and to trust what he has in his hands. At the end of the book, though not the end of his journey, you find that he has found peace. You may also find that while reading the book, you took his journey with him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Omissions of a Screenwriter, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Hollywoodaholic: Confessions of a Screenwriter (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
Got the book for Christmas. Thanks, Mom. She knows me well. I love books about the movie business. I especially love confession books. So, needless to say, I was excited to dive into this one. I read it in one day. It's a quick and easy read.

Over all, Hollywoodaholic is an enjoyable read that has its moments. However, a confession book it is not. Though the reader is taken through Wayne Carter's journey as a screenwriter in the sleazy era of Hollywood by way of letters that he wrote to family and friends, one cannot help but think that he's leaving stuff out. I thought this as I burned through the pages then I realized that of course he is omitting things. These are letters to family and friends! Only a maniac would share everything in his twisted little mind and life with the people closest to him! I couldn't imagine putting to paper my unedited thoughts and feelings to my family or friends. It is why I chose to be a writer myself. Only then am I able to express myself through the guise of fiction and drama.

In all seriousness, Hollywoodaholic is a good time and a voyeuristic look into the thankless job of a Hollywood screenwriter. Too bad Carter's comedies didn't get made. They sounded great!
