4.0 out of 5 stars Bogart, Grant, Stewart, Robinson, December 6, 2007
This review is from: Hollywood's Leading Men Collection - 4 Movie Pack (DVD)
HOLLYWOOD'S LEADING MEN is a very nicely packaged small collection of some of the most common public domain films currently in circulation. As advertised, four of mid 20th Century's most famous male stars are featured.

CONTENTS:

BEAT THE DEVIL-- John Huston directed and Truman Capote screen-polished this story of crooks hoping to buy African land that has uranium on it. Not all that funny or interesting; Bogart himself called this one "a dog."

HIS GIRL FRIDAY-- Excellent screen adaptation of the Ben Hecht/Charles MacArthur play, "The Front Page." A superior cast (headed by Cary Grant) keep the jokes coming at a fast clip in this story of a news editor, his ex-wife reporter and a man accused of murder. Look for Cliff Edwards (Jiminy Cricket's voice) as a reporter, and Helen Mack (co-star in "The Son of Kong") in a minor role.

MADE FOR EACH OTHER-- A young couple marries after a whirlwind courtship of a single day. Their troubles begin soon after and continue to mount: lack of money, an unapproving mother (his), and a dying child who might be saved by a serum that's grounded in Salt Lake City due to bad weather. Produced by David Selznick the same year he made "Gone With the Wind."

SCARLET STREET-- A middle-aged man (Edw. Robinson) befriends a younger woman who, at the urging of her conniving boyfriend, tries to bilk him out of a fortune he doesn't have. Directed by Fritz Lang, who also made the silent classic "Metropolis."
