This review is from: Holman Old Testament Commentary - Daniel (Hardcover)
I read this commentary from the perspective of an average churchgoer who wanted to take the book of Daniel more seriously. This commentary will help you read Daniel and walk away with a better understanding. The perspective is conservative and evangelical, though the author (Kenneth Gangel) does mention other interpretations.
God's sovereignty is central to the book of Daniel and this commentary. Gangel believes in the historicity of the accounts portrayed (lions den, fiery furnace, etc) and in predictive prophecy (God describing almost 400 years of history in the second half of the book). His summaries and applications emphasize that God is the main character of this book. Gangel provides a great balance of outlines, summaries, and specifics to help the reader understand the text. This is accessible for the average reader, and there are references if you would like a more academic treatment. If you'd like to understand the book of Daniel more, this commentary is certainly worth reading.
