Vagn Holmboe's four Sinfonias for String Orchestra were written over a five-year period in the late 1950s and early 1960s and are subsumbed under the Danish composer's opus number 73. On this BIS disc, Owain Arwel Hughes conducts the Camerata Wales.

These four pieces are of variable lengths and moods. Sinfonia No. 1 (1957) is brief and spirited, 10 minutes of dance figures. Sinfonia No. 2 (1957) is more poignant, and its climax reaches nearly to the same height of Holmboe's best symphonies. Sinfonia No. 3 is astringent. Sinfonia No. 4 (1962) is mysterious and fragmented, split into four movements that overall have a feeling of stasis.

But after writing the Sinfonia No. 4, Holmboe came up with the idea of a concert-length programme, where the four movements of that last piece are broken up and serve as prelude, two interludes and postlude to the preceding 3 sinfonias. He gave this arrangement the title "Kairos". Now, unlike the competing recording of this music on Dacapo (which I've not yet here), "Kairos" isn't provided here on a separate disc. However, listeners can program their stereo system to play the pieces in the prescribed order.

The first two Sinfonias are quite good and I come back to them often. I don't think the remainder, however, is among Holmboe's finest music and I personally think the "Kairos" experiment unsuccessful. Fans of the composer will find this disc worthwhile, but it can wait until you've collected his amazing cycle of thirteen Symphonies, the four Symphonic Metamorphoses and some concertos.
