I literally just received this handy dandy compact air purifier. Brand spanking new out of the box, the low setting is very quiet and suitable for use on a desktop without causing major headaches. The high speed, which obviously would process more air, is much like sitting with your ear next to a box fan. I purchased this unit, along with a couple of others, for a smoker in the household hoping to not only eradicate my house of the smoke smell, but also to try and capture the smoke itself. I looked at the various "smoke eating" ashtrays, but besides looking like they would be a pain to clean, they are not exactly useful whenever the cigarette is removed from the ashtray itself and actually smoked.
My issue with this Holmes Arm & Hammer Odor Grabber Air Purifier is that the front of the unit is attractive enough and looks rather innocuous, the rear of the unit, where the real work takes place, is not quite as attractive. All you see back there is the back side of the exposed filter. To me, this is a definite design flaw. Unless you are able to set the unit smack dab in the middle of your room, its intake is going to be greatly limited if set, say on a bookshelf or on a table near a wall. When placed on a desk, the fan, even when set on low, creates quite a breeze which is a bit chilly in these winter months. With the unit turned around, however, it is much better and I could see smoke from an ashtray placed nearby being sucked right into the unit and clean air coming out via the fan. Facing forward, all the unit did was blow the smoke further into the room and while I assume it would eventually get circulated through the unit if the room were kept closed off from the rest of the house, placing the unit with the backside towards the source of the odor and allergens seems like it would be a much more efficient use of the unit and its purification abilities. I plan on purchasing a small piece of black wire mesh/screen that I can cut, bend and fold to fit over the filter and give it a little more polished look.

A useful product to own, but it really needs to be bigger in order to to process more air.
