I bought one of these because my wife, daughter, and I had stayed with a smoker relative while waiting to move into our own home. Fortunately, our bedrooms were on the lower "non-smoking" level, so this filter had a fighting chance against the tobacco smoke that made it through the central air/heating system. In addition, the basement had flooded years ago, and although there were no visible signs of mold, the HEPA filter sure couldn't hurt. We ran this thing constantly and there is NO QUESTION that this filter made a substantial difference in air quality over what we experienced the first few days. The filters were downright nasty in just a few months.
Be sure to budget for the filters, which are going to run you 50 dollars for the HEPA filters (2x25), plus about 3 bucks each for two carbon filters. Obviously, the life of the filter will be based on the dirtiness of your air and/or how much you run the unit.

Holmes Hepa Air Cleaner,

This review is from: Holmes® HAP726-U True HEPA Allergen Remover for Medium to Large Rooms (Kitchen)
I really like this air cleaner. I have used several other models (sharper image, honeywell, etc.) and this is my favorite. I usually use level 1 at night, and level 2 during the day when I am home. Levels 3 and 4 are a bit loud. I like that I can program it to run for a certain amount of time and not have to worry about turning it off. On really hot days, i will actually program it to run for a few hours to keep the house cool for my pets.

Do you need this for allergies? in particular CAT DANDER?,

I have mild allergies to kitties/cats, that is to say i can play with one intensely (kissing, hugging etc) for about 15 min before i start sneezing and if i continue i will surely regret it. Knowing this i still took in a Kittie and love him very much but after a few months my air was saturated with allergens and it started creating serious health problems for me. Eventually i had to make a trip to the hospital from waking up so wheezy from the allergy triggered asthma that it could have ended it all right there. So i was told by the doctor that unless i have a death wish, get rid of the cat. Having grown found of my new roommate i refused. The reality is if i can rid my room of allergen saturated air i can absolutely keep him. I know this because my allergies generally are triggered from extended direct interaction with one not merely being near one, my allergy is not THAT bad. I have a small room and after about two months of living with my kittie it was so saturated with cat dander and i noticed my sinus were never clean, i was never be able to breathe easy and clearly anymore. I would even started waking up in the middle of the night from gasping as if someone had held my mouth and nose shut. For me it was essential that i use a TRUE Hepa filter and not just something the clears dust for example.
I was not sure what model to get but i eventually chose this one. So what is my review? its AMAZING lol. Just the third night of running this full time i woke up with a clear nose and clear sinuses and didn't have Asthma during exercise anymore which was beginning to happen as a consequence of the contaminated air i was constantly breathing. My lung capacity, ability to breathe was shot. This fixed everything! I can now run with minimal notice that i live with a cat and i can breathe full deep air with the use of my NOSE again while at home. My room is about 100sq feet right now, pretty small, this particular model works wonders in here. I can breathe again, you have no idea how amazing it feels to have my respiratory health back. So, if you are getting this for cat dander i am here to say it works! i can now keep my cuddly and not die from it lol. I am a very happy costumer, could it do a better job? perhaps, i do notice that if i turn if off for a day or even just slightly more than half a day i do notice symptoms returning but not too quickly, i can tell they will be back in two days of not running it. I am not sure if the air should stay clean for days after cleaning the air but in anycase... as long as its on, i'm golden. I highly recommend it for a cat relief and Actually i have a friend that could no loger stand to visit due to his allergies and he doesnt not notice i even have a cat now that i got this, score. Welcome back, dear friends with allergies!

We have four of these Holmes air cleaners now, a larger model for the main floor, and three of this size for the master bedroom, second bedroom, and basement rec room, and they definitely are the best in a long series of air cleaners I've owned over the years. I especially like the LED warning lights that tell you when it's time to change the filters.

Holmes not truly honor their warranty,

Purchase a Holmes HAP756 in January 2009 and it is dead after 5 months. Call service department, they quickly sent me a new replacement without telling me that they were sending me a smaller unit (HAP 726). After contacted the service dept. last week, Holmes refused to send me the same model for replacement claiming the model was no longer in stock because they don't produce anymore. In fact the model HAP756 and HAP756U (current selling model is almost identical except for a chrome trim at the control panel). Beware buying any products from this company, they are not truly honor their warranty.

My apartment has mold and I was waking up stuffed up and until I am able to move out I thought I would get this. I am now waking up with minimal sinus problems. I am pleased with the product. It makes noise but nothing I wasn't expecting. I recommend this.

I bought this air filter after my old one (same brand)started running hot and I was afraid to use it (had it running almost 24 hours a day for about 4 years). This one is smaller than my old one but works just as great. It's in a room with two shedding rabbits and it really gets the fur that floats around the room. I just vacuum the charcoal filters twice a week to get the fur that collects on them. The lowest setting runs nice and quiet and is a nice background white noise.

Bought the Holmes HAP726-U to help relieve my girlfriends allergies when she visits. It works great. Since she is able to sleep at night, I am able to sleep at night. Great product and simple to use. There is a power button, a plus and minus button, and a digital display. To use the timer, hold down the plus and minus button at the same time, and when it starts to flash, use the same buttons to adjust the timer. Its size is a little bigger than a standard computer tower. It doubles great during the summer as a fan. It isn't that loud if you have it running on 2 (out of 4) when trying to sleep.
I didn't give it a 5, because the replacement HEPA and carbon filter are expensive. This purifier uses 2 HEPA and 2 carbon filters.

This year, my kids and my husband have very bad allergy. We consulted the kids' doctor and decided to try to find an air purifier which can help to remove allergen. After doing some researches on different air-purifiers, my husband decided to try this one. I bought it with the Amazon gift card that I have and received this model a few days afterwards. After a few hours, it seemed to work. The kids did not cough when they played in the room with the air-purifier's on. My husband checked the air-purifier and saw all the dust and dirts picked up on the filters. The first night, we left it on for a few hours, all the kids and my husband did not cough. The only drawback is the noise. Overall, we are happy with this model and would recommend it to the others.

Don't do it!!,

I have owned this air cleaner for 3 years now and I really really would NOT recommend it. With new filters in (carbon + HEPA) it works just fine. However, there are several reasons this should be considered very carefully before buying. The filters are expensive, around $35 for a two pack. The device takes three filters. So, you have to spend $70 to do the first full replacement, then $35, then $70 and so on. Carbon filters are cheap and come in a logical three pack for about $10. Set on a fan speed of three, which is the second highest setting, the filters need replaced every 4-6 months. This adds up to a lot of money, upwards of $100, and hassle every year. The fan is very strong, but blows the air all in one direction and it is off to one side of the unit. So, depending on which wall you place this against, the air will be blowing either along the wall toward the main area of your room or into a corner. It's a strange way to design the thing. If you are on a budget now and need a unit for medium size rooms that uses HEPA filters now and either expect to toss it in six months or to have gobs of money to spend on filters later on, then this unit might make some sense. However, these days, a unit like the Sanyo ABC VW24A Virus Washer Air Purifier (just ordered it today) or any other number of units (take a look at the Sharp Plasmawaves) with long-life (4-5yr washable HEPA) filters can be had for just over $100. The Austin Air units also are true work horses with filters that last a solid 4-5 years for around $350. Anyway you do the math, it makes very little financial sense in most cases to buy a unit with these disposable, short-life filters. That has been my experience for what it's worth. Bottom line: After three years with this thing I am tired of the cost and hassle of buying and changing its six (3 carbon + 3 HEPA) filters 2-3 times per year. |
