3.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect...
I agree with most reviewers that this fan performs the basic quite well. BUT, two issues: if you have a screen window, it may not fit well, depend on the window, the intake/back area of the fan maybe too thick for the space between the screen and actual window glass. Also, people failed to mention that this unit WILL bring in a lot of dust(ie allergen) into the room...

This product is wonderful! We bought 2 last year and will buy 2 more for other rooms this year, saving a lot of money over window unit air conditioners. We love the ease of operation with the remote - so nice to use from bed. My young daughter likes to use the remote to operate her fan. We also like the exhaust and exchange features, using the best mode for the time of day. We appreciate the Accutemp feature; it operates according to the room's temperature and shuts off when the room has been adequately cooled. This model has excellent adjustable fit to windows - very easy to install.

Also, people failed to mention that this unit WILL bring in a lot of dust(ie allergen) into the room. If you are an allergy sufferer, don't never bother running the intake or exchange mode. Even if you are not, you will have to deal with a much dustier/dirty room. Had they added a HEPA filter or make that an option, then this thing would be much better rated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fan for the price, June 27, 2003

This fan works very well for us. The exhaust feature (without having to turn the entire unit around) is a plus, as well as the exchange feature. The remote is helpful/necessary, because the buttons are very hard to locate and press. It is bulkier than a simple twin window fan because of all the electronic controls, so it might not fit on everyone's window sill. Bottom line - it blows! And that's a good thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fan, June 20, 2003

This is a great fan. My parents' house is air-conditioned, but my room, being at the very end of the ductwork, barely gets any air. This fan's exchange and exhaust modes are perfect for my room.

The fan runs quiet, and I hardly notice it, even at night. The thermostat is a nice touch, however when the room finally reaches the temperature that's desired, the fan cycles on and off about twice a second, and there is an audible "click" each time. An annoyance, yes, but when you take into account that it means the fan has cooled my room 4-5 degrees, the benefits outweigh the slight annoyance of the sound.

I would recommend this fan to everyone looking for a good, solid window unit. It will be travelling with me to college, and it looks like it'll serve me well.

4.0 out of 5 stars good value...but watch that fuse!, July 27, 2004

This review is from: Holmes HAWF-2097 Remote Control Twin Window Fan (Kitchen)
You know - I think this represents great value for money. I needed something for the kitchen for when I'm cooking, to act as an extractor and ensure airflow was out of the kitchen window rather then into the rest of the house. This little puppy handles it without a problem - a double fan sucking all that air, remote controlled, reversible fan direction, multi-speed - it was just what was needed.

My only problem was when I dropped it, it stopped working (no surprise there). So I took it apart and found that the fuse was hard wired onto the circuit board and it had broken when it was dropped. Now that's just silly. Make the fuse replaceable for goodness sake. So, a bit of soldering and a new fuse and it was working again...but annoying.

A neat little unit that does what its supposed to: good value.

Happy shopping
JB

4.0 out of 5 stars Window/Fan. Nice quality for the money, August 4, 2003

This review is from: Holmes HAWF-2097 Remote Control Twin Window Fan (Kitchen)
This fan's much higher quality than the Lasko job it replaced and the reversing action, remote control and more powerful twin fans are great. On high speed it exchanges the air in my 8x12 bedroom about 4 times an hour and really saves on air conditioning costs so here in CA I use it alot. I was surprised when UPS delivered this item in just a slip case with no padding or protection but owing to the free shipping who can complain; it's been working fine ever since so I guess no damage.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Invented by Holmes in 1985"? Hardly! Also, Reduce Dust, June 22, 2003

Dust reduction - see bottom.

"Invented by Holmes in 1985, window fans are ideal...."

Where do copy writers come up with this stuff? I still have my homemade window fan from freshman year, '79/80. I remember helping my dad install a large window fan ca, 1970. I vaguely remember that fan from a place we left after 2nd grade. I think that fan may have been older than I was.

The fan was a huge heavy metal affair. In 1970, we didn't have a window large enough to mount it. We actually used it as an upstairs/attic exhaust fan. We cut a whole in the door to the attic, covered it with louvers over a metal mesh, reinforced the attic side bottom and lower edges with 2x4s, and mounted it. It barely fit, so I'm guessing the fan was 36"x36" with 1 or 2 slide-out sides. It required some effort from a young teenage boy to keep my side in place when we mounted it. It was multi-speed, reversible, included a temperature control setting (although my dad may have added that), and had a "remote" (well, a switch at the bottom of the stairs we wired ourselves). It created a minor wind tunnel in that limited area. You could feel the breeze it created around the closet door, through the bedroom, and down the hall to the dining room. Awesome.

"Invented in 1985" Bah humbug.

Less Noise; Less Dust.
BTW, the advertised fan is a good fan, but a little loud. If you want something quieter, look for a single large fan (say 20" diameter) instead of two small fans. That will move more air while creating less noise. If you use it on intake, consider putting a simple furnace filter screen between the fan and the windows screen. It is hardly a HEPA filter, but will greatly reduce the dust and pollen. I buy a large cheap furnace filter, cut oversized portions to fit, and tape it to the fan casing. This will reduce the air flow substantially, but it is well worth it where I live. A sidenote, Consumer Reports testing says a window fan will move slightly more air overall set on exhaust rather than intake.

I use this fan to ventilate gas fumes from my Lawn Mower Storage Shed after I've finished mowing so that there is no chance of vapor accumulation or heat buildup in the shed from the Rider Engine........

Works Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
