5.0 out of 5 stars Great Customer Service
I purchased this heater in October 05' to help heat a drafty living room. The heater worked great and then after having it for 6 months and running it all the time except when we weren't home one of the elements went out on it. I called Holmes and they sent me a new one right away for just the cost of shipping no questions asked and no hassle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst heater I have ever had
This heater has had a very short life with me (less than a year), and it has just suddenly died. From the very beginning it was the most peculiar heater I have ever had. I had previously owned a Holmes radiant heater that was not digital, and when it died (it didn't live that long either!) I got this one. What a huge disappointment! It seems as if they made everything...

This is just a quick note. I live in Atlanta in a large house. It is costly to turn the central heat on just to take the chill off a couple of rooms when if you wait long enough it generally will warm up. I have used Holems quartz heaters for several years moving them around as needed. The current model sold here in 2007 is much improved over the ones sold back before 2005. One nice feature is that they include a circuit breaker in a module at the plug end. You can tap that switch to instantly turn one off rather then step through all the different settings using the top mounted switch. I am here checking the current price as I intend to buy a coouple of more of these so they don't need to be moved around. These are really nice space heaters compared to the junk I have tried over the years. They hold up even in the humid enviroment of the bath.

I highly recomend this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Of All The Heaters I've Tried, January 24, 2008

I really like the Holmes HQH319 heater. I'm a single person in a large house. I spend most of my evenings in my home office, so I use the HQH319 in that room rather than heating the whole house with the central system. I went through several other heaters over a three year period before settling on this one. I've used two different ceramic heaters, one was a low cube and one was a tower. Neither one of those put out as much heat as I wanted yet they consumed a lot of electricity. Then I tried a parabolic heater. It was much more efficient, but the beam of heat was too narrow. It would heat a portion of my body too much and the rest not enough.

I've had my HGH319 for about two months which is long enough to verify that it doesn't cost as much to use as the ceramic heaters did, yet it puts out a lot more heat. I've never had to use the high setting. I like the fact that on low, both heating elements are still on. Some quarts heaters just use one element on low. The internal fan is great and not very loud. It pulls air in from the top and pushes it out the front which heats my whole body as well as heating the whole room rather easily. The heating elements rattle a bit during the first few seconds of warming up, but that is standard on quarts heaters. The rattle goes away almost immediately.

The lifting handle molded into the back of the case is in a good location and stays cool. Don't mistake the bar across the front for a handle because it gets HOT!! It's just there to keep the front of the heater off the floor in case of a tip-over.

I do wish the heater had a remote control. I also wish it turned off a bit easier. Instead of having an ON/OFF switch separate from a temperature setting control, it's an all-in-one electronic control. To turn the heater off, you have to push the button several times to scroll through the various settings until it turns off. Another method is to hold the button down for about three seconds until the heater turns off. Although slightly annoying, I'll sacrifice those minor inconveniences for the fact that I get a lot of heat with very little electricity. Overall, I love this heater and highly recommend it.

NOTE: I also have a Holmes HQH307 which is a cheaper version of the HQH319. It has the same external case and the same heating elements, so you get the same great, efficient heat. There are two main differences: First is that the controls on the HQH307 are manual. I actually prefer that. One switch turns the heater on or off, the other controls the temperature settings. The second difference is the fan noise. The HQH307 is fairly loud. I don't know why it's so much louder than the HQH319 because they appear to be identical. I use the HQH307 in my master bathroom. I turn it on before I hop in the shower first thing in the morning. By the time I get out of the shower, the bathroom is toasty warm and I can stand in front of the heater while drying off. For that purpose, I don't care that the fan is loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOLMES tower works GREAT for parents!!, January 2, 2008

I purchased this heater for my parents who were keeping the heat turned down on the oil furnace due to high oil prices. Their fisrt months electric bill after starting the heater was only $1.00 more than the previous month!!! The house is warm and they use the heater ALL the time!! What a way to offset high fuel oil costs!!!

I've owned this product now for almost 4 years. Although I knew I was getting a slightly older model, I bought it for its safety features. I was surprised at how tall this unit is (2 ft approx.) in comparison to the seemingly small online picture.

Pros: It heats our little office very nicely. The thermostat consistently maintains the desired temperature (although I'm not 100% sure of the accuracy of the thermostat). Never once has it kept running past the set temp! That, to me, is a very impressive safety feature in comparison to the various others I've read about online and (unfortunately) discovered in our own small Bionairre that we've also had for years. The Bionnaire's thermostat has, on several occasions, not worked at all, in that it kept heating past the pre-set temp. I've had to manually shut off the unit before it was too late - thank you Lord! Never once (so far) have we had this serious issue with the Holmes HQH319-U! It's light weight, but a bit tall for my liking. The tip over safety feature has worked consistently well. I have not had to reset the unit in almost 4 yrs. It's also very bump-sensitive, in that, whenever I accidentally bump it, it immediately shuts itself off! The power cord has an added padding feature for about a foot coming out of the machine, that makes it a bit more sturdier and reliable than others. We've not had an unusual/noticable surge in our seasonal electricity bill due to this unit.

Cons: It's extremely loud at night and the glow can be slightly bright. We couldn't sleep for the first 2 nights in a row due to the noise. I'd compare it to the distortion-like noise of a T.V. when there is no reception/input. My wife and I woke up thinking the alarm went off really loud. Besides, it's not made in the USA!

Areas to improve/enhance: Researching a quieter way to operate without sacrificing existing features and/or price. Panel should have up and down buttons to control the temp, instead of pushing just one button several times until you get to the desired temp. I'd like to be able to control the temp in increments of 1 instead of the current 5. Also, the back side carrying handle (?) could use more grab room/depth so as to make lifting and carrying easier. As of right now, when carrying it feels like I might drop it. Also, having it in dark grey/black (etc.) colors might make it more appealing/attractive.

Bottomline opinion: It's ideal for day time/evening use for a small to mid-size room/garage/apartment etc. Also, ideal with pets (we have 4 critters) and I'm pretty sure it'll be just fine around little kids. Not recommended for night time use in bedroom while trying to sleep, unless using ear plugs or placed at farthest distance in a large room. I raised the rating to 4 stars because of it's consistent overall performance over the last almost 4 years.Holmes HQH319-U Quartz Tower Heater with 1Touch® Electronic Thermostat

I didn't realize how big it was. It is an excellent heater, but I would have liked a smaller one that put out the same amount of heat. It heats quickly, and the thermostat makes it easy to control

It seems as if they made everything completely non-intuitive. It is very noisy at start up (but so was the previous model), the bar on the front gets very hot which is extremely dangerous because the tendency is to use it as a handle (I have burns to prove it), and turning it off is the most un-intuitive thing I have ever seen. You have to hold down the button while it goes to the highest heat (makes you think you did it wrong) before it shuts off. Though I liked the model they had before this one, this is a real dud. After I finally got used to all its peculiarities, today the heating element went. But perhaps just as well. I have been very unhappy with this fan since the beginning.

I purchased this Holmes Quartz heater about a month ago for my wife, who likes a *lot* of heat. She did not find it adequate -- it puts out a decent amount of heat, but it is not "burning" by any means. On a freezing day it does not heat her 12x12 office to 75+ degrees as she likes it. She switched to a heater with a parabolic "satellite dish" to focus the heat directly at her. That parabolic heater does not warm the office either, but it heats up anything right in front of it, to the point of discomfort, which is how she likes it!

I'm not "cold-blooded" like my wife, and I find the Holmes heater quite acceptable. Running it for 15 minutes warms up my 15x15 office for a few hours on a freezing day. The fan is a bit noisy like a typical desktop oscillating fan, but it's just more white noise in the office. The safety features are good, and maybe you'll like the thermostat control, though a simple on/off switch is enough for me.

This heater works well in a small area like a den or a small bedroom, but in my 14 x 14 kitchen it just can't put out enough heat to make a big difference. It is better as a heater to put near your feet in a chilly room or in a room that needs a "boost". But a grat deal for the money, and I'd buy another if I needed a space heater for another small room. Not too noisy and I feel better knowing it will shut off if it tips over.
