Saves money on replacement filters,
By
This review is from: Holmes S1708 Bacteriostat for Cool Mist Humidifiers (Kitchen)
For several years we have used a large humidifier during the winter months. Despite frequent cleaning and care, we had to replace the humidifier filters every few weeks. We started using the Holmes Bacteriostat last winter and only had to replace the filter a single time, three-quarters of the way through the winter.
Follow the directions on the bottle and not only save money by not having to replace the humidifier filters as often, but it can also save you from breathing mold spores growing on an untreated filter (before the filter even looks like it needs changing).

We could not find this item anywhere then i looked on amazon.com and here it was. You have to use antibacterial even when you get a ball with the machine that is said to do the job.
I love this product. I like the larger bottles and it really makes our room clean smelling not musty and molded. Our maching stays super clean and free of all bacteria and molds using this. I would not be without it. If you are using a humidifier and they say you do not need to add chemical, wrong. Buy this and you will see the difference and how clean your machine and air stays.

This is a great product. Have not had any musty odor smell coming from the humidifier. The filters also last alot longer and there is a great amount in this bottle and all it takes is a capfull each time you fill the tank. Only thing bad is the strong chemical smell when you open the bottle however there is no smell that comes from the humidifier.

Before we tried the S1708 in our humidifier MA0800, we had to replace the filter about once per month. I would buy a case of 6 filters for over $60 each winter season. Since our baby was born we have decided to leave the humidifier running year round. I have used a bottle of this and am now ordering another and have only used 2 filters this entire year. I went to change it like normal, but the filter was like new. The only time I've had to change the filter is when we left it off for a few weeks with water in the tank.
Great product that saves me money. Thanks Holmes! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

I started using this product nights in my humidifier fall 2009. Came down with acute bronchitis Dec. 2009; had to go to emergency room in Jan. 2010 and subsequently was on oxygen for 10 days. Took 7 weeks to get rid of the bronchitis [and cost me a lot of money]. Guess how I contracted the bronchitis -- the bacteriostatic ingedient in this product: dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. [Yes, we were able to isolate this variable in my environment.] Research this ingredient, and you will see that it can indeed induce bronchitis. So be very careful how you use products that contain it!!

I am using it in a wick type of humidifier. Use to have problems with a moldy smell from the humdifier and I could see black stuff growing on the wicks. Used it for the whole winter 2010-11 and found it completely eliminated the smell. In addition it kept the wicks from getting the black discoloration. I use it with RO water and the wicks will last the whole winter. Previously I would have to change the wicks monthly during the winter months due to a combination of the hard water deposits from the tap water and the mold. Installed a RO water filtration system(another story)and started using this. So this has saved me the cost of new wicks in addition to getting rid of the smell. It also reduces the slime/algae that forms in the tank where the wicks sit. The label says not for use in heating and atomizing humidifiers. As far as the active compound it is a widely used disinfectant in a large number of household products. Of course mold itself is also dangerous. The dosage is very low just a capful per gallon but that seems to do the trick.

This bacteriostat works great for humidifiers that simply blow air through a wet filter (not for use with a "cool mist" humidifier). It has a slight odor that goes away after about 30-45 minutes after you add it to the water and start the humidifier. After about three months, it has worked very well to keep our two humidifiers free from musty odors or growth.

I don't know that this product makes my filters last any longer, but I do feel a lot better breathing in the air with this stuff in the humidifier. I bought this previously at Wal*Mart for around $3, and on Amazon for around $13. Hopefully they'll drop the price, or I'll find it at Wal*mart again.
