Book Description

June 1, 1998 0765759845 978-0765759849
The Holocaust: A Chronology and Documentary traces the events of the years 1933 through 1946, from the advent of Adolf Hitler's rise to political power through the year following the end of World War II. Through eyewitness testimony, excerpts and summaries from documents, and additional relevant material drawn from Jewish, Allied, German, and other sources, the experiences of the victims, victimizers, and bystanders are presented in an honest manner.

As the past vividly unfolds, a number of issues emerge. We see that many European governments and people had a long history of legislative, political, economic, social, and finally murderous attacks on Jewish civilians under their control, and that there were many factors other than Adolf Hitler and his collaborators that made the Holocaust possible. The true role of the Allied nations is also presented. It is shown that members of the Allied governments knew of the Final Solution almost as soon as it was begun, and that the attitudes of many important American and British officials concerned with foreign policy and refugees paralleled those of the Nazis and their collaborators. Also brought to light are the decency and heroism of the thousands of individuals in both the Allied nations and occupied Europe who treated the Jews with respect and the Holocaust with the urgency it deserved, and the variety of ways the Jews reacted to the Nazis and their collaborators.

Since the inclusion of the author's opinions are kept to an absolute minimum, this unique historical overview enables readers to evaluate the events, the people, and the attitudes of the time with a fresh, uncluttered eye.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book and its author changed my life, May 16, 2001

This review is from: The Holocaust: A Chronology and Documentary (Hardcover)
I am a student at Umass Dartmouth, and I was fortunate enough to take a class with Robert Michael during his last year of teaching. His teaching methods, albeit shocking at first, were some of the best I've ever had. This university is losing a great professor. Michael will be missed.

But concerning the book: after reading it--literally after getting to the last page--my emotions collapsed. The deaths of 6, 000, 000 innocent Jews hit me like a ton of bricks. I cried. And I hurt. I had to put the book down and leave, for I could no longer bear reading . . .

Robert Michael seems to put just the right subject matter, as well as stunning personal excerpts from victims, in at the right time. I laughed, I cried, I cheered (because of Jewish/Christian courage), and I felt nauseous. It was certianly a catharsis, and something I'll never forget.

I've read enough on the Holocaust to know that this book is top notch. It will give you a mini-education on one of the world's most heinous events.

Buy this book. If you can handle your emotions and get through it, you will not be disappointed.
