Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up--A solidly researched, well-organized, and clearly written survey of the struggle of Jews and non-Jews alike to resist Nazi Germany's efforts to annihilate Europe's Jewish population. Many highly informative boxes and sidebars enhance the text. Bachrach's approach is mainly topical and geographical rather than chronological. Attention is devoted to: the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; the Polish and Soviet Jews who fled to the forests and formed guerrilla bands; the hiding of Jews in the Netherlands; the Protestant pastors of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France, who organized an effort to rescue and hide Jews in their village; and the bravery of the Danes in protecting and evacuating Denmark's small Jewish population. Raoul Wallenberg's assistance to the Jews of Hungary, and the United States government's reluctance to speak out until late into the war are also discussed. The author concludes that the true extent and effectiveness of such a movement is difficult at best to assess, but that it is important to acknowledge the events and people who took part. A good companion volume to the adult book, The Resistance, edited by Russell Miller (Time-Life Books, 1979; o.p.), as well as Elaine Landau's The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (New Discovery Books, 1992). A wide variety of black-and-white archival photographs, many of which are poignant and heart wrenching, are included.

2.0 out of 5 stars BOOK REVIEW, November 20, 2005
This review is from: The Holocaust Library - The Resistance (Library Binding)
My Class is beginning to study about World War II and the Holocaust. We were recently given an assignment to choose a book about the Holocaust and write a book review about it. The book I chose to read is part of The Holocaust Library, called The Resistance written by Deborah Bachrach. The Holocaust Library includes seven volumes that cover different parts of the Holocaust.

According to this book more than eleven million people were killed by the Germans in World War II. It covers the beginning when Adolph Hitler began World War II trying to be a worldwide leader. The book tells how Hitler planned to kill the Jewish people and hide it from the rest of the world. It also describes the resistance small and large that the Jews showed against the Germans. The book tells about which countries helped the Jews and which ones turned their backs. This book goes into great detail about the Holocaust and of the details of all the horrible killings and all the things the Jews did to try and save themselves, their families and friends.

After finishing the book I have decided that I really didn't like it. A lot of the words are very difficult to pronounce especially the German and foreign language words. We have learned about some of the words in class but too much of the time I didn't quite understand what they were talking about. I felt it had too many details about one subject, then took off on another subject and it was just to much back and forth, it just couldn't hold my attention. One good thing about the book were the pictures. They really showed what life must have been like during the Holocaust. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone my age just to read for fun. This type of book would be better used if you had to write a research paper.
