5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Gem, March 8, 2000
By
John Buie (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holst The Planets (Audio CD)
James Judd and the Royal Philharmonic give a remarkable performance of Holst's masterpiece. Each section is phrased beautifully, unfailingly evoking the essence of its theme. Mars is hard-hitting with thrills galore, yet doesn't cross the line between musical excitement and in-your-face bombast (like the popular Dutoit version). Venus likewise captivates, its other-worldly beauty bringing thoughts of complete serenity. I could go on... Before you heed the reviews and purchase the Dutoit cd, give a listen to this undiscovered gem. It may turn out that JJ/RPO's performance of "The Planets" will be the one you'll want to blast-off to.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best version, June 10, 2011
This review is from: Holst: The Planets (MP3 Download)
I have heard many versions and variations of Holst's The Planets and this is the one I found to be the best and the most enjoyable. There is not much else I can say. This is the one you want.

This review is from: Holst The Planets (Audio CD)
I had been searching for this CD for quite a while, ever since hearing it on the radio. It's a perfect recording and interpretation for my tastes, exciting, serene, mystical, and a great opening "Mars."
