New American Standard Bible, Update Edition: The most literal, word-for-word English Translation available, updated to unfold more nuances of meaning. Vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure have been carefully revised to improve readability. The NASB is excellent for Bible study because it aims at a precise translation of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The NASB represents a conservative, literal approach to translation. More than 20 translators and conservative Bible scholars, representing a variety of denominational backgrounds, spent nearly three years completing the project. The team carefully adhered to the principles of literal translation and made no attempt to interpret Scripture through translation. The original NASB was complete in 1971. The 1995 edition made several updates. Words that have changed meaning have been updated; the archaic pronouns "Thee" and "Thou" have been eliminated in reference to Deity; verbs that have a wide range of meaning have been retranslated to better account for their use in the context; punctuation and paragraphing have been formatted to todays standards; and notes about the ancient manuscripts have been revised to include more new and interesting facts.

Strong on text, weak on notes,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Holy Bible: Updated New American Standard Bible- Containing the Old Testament and the New Testament (Hardcover)
The NASB is widely recognized as the most literal contemporary translation of the Bible, and the 1995 Update enhances this translation's readability. This Thinline edition is both a convenient and attractive presentation of the NASB text, with its slender size, large print, and tasteful binding. However, this edition has one serious drawback, not apparent until one opens the book (as I discovered the hard way!}--namely, its deletion of most of the translators' own footnotes. Though clearly this was done to save space, these notes, which discuss grammatical points and provide alternative renderings of the Hebrew and Greek texts, are the most informative of any translation; they contribute significantly to the NASB's primary value as a tool for close, detailed word study. For some readers, therefore, the Thinline's convenience and appeal to the eye may have been achieved at too high a cost to its usefulness.

the large print makes reading the bible more enjoyable. i am not straining my eyes which causes fatigue. less fatigue makes reading the WORD more enjoyable and have longer devotionals. the real great feature is that it is really really thin!!! so it is more portable and convient to praise the creator and meditate in this glory.this is the second one that i am buying for a friend.... :^)

Pure Sacred Scripture, Word for Word,

Okay, so I'm a Roman Catholic and wish they'd also translated the Deuterocanonical (Protestant "Apocryphal") books. Still, this is the best study Bible out there. The translators have held to their literal word-for-word translation philosophy (as opposed to though-for-thought "translation," or concept-for-concept "interpretation of some of the weaker English Bibles). The only significant criticism, worth about a 1/2 star is that modern study can still benefit from the technically archaic second person singlar/plural (thou, thee, thy, thine and you, ye, your, yours) when attempting to discern whether or not the addressor was speaking to single persons, or more than one. I keep my KJV handy for that, in addition to my Spanish Reina-Valera 1960. : )Ignore those who complain about lack of notes. This Bible wasn't meant to have them. Get yourself a good couple of commentaries and have at it, if notes are what you want.
