The 21st Century King James Bible (21st Century King James Bible Publishers, 1995)

I tried. I really did. I've always meant to read the Bible, at least in the spirit of "know thy enemy", but before this I'd always gotten it piecemeal. Everyone knows bits of the Bible, but few read it cover to cover. And I tried. And now I understand why so few actually do. If you consider this a sacred text, no doubt, you're willing to make some allowances for it. Coming to it as an outsider, all I can say is that's a lot of allowances. From a strictly textual standpoint, it's horrendous. Repetitive, condescending, full of itself, contradictory, and just plain boring. Perhaps the Nicaea folks should have commissioned some rewrites. (But I've always been of the hypothesis that Constantine never actually converted and was trying to undermine the religion. It does explain a lot, if you think about it.) Maybe someday I'll try again, but my first attempt at reading the Bible cover to cover was about as big a bust as it could have been. (zero)

flat beer with what is left
