About the Actor

The precise, mellifluous voice of Alexander Scourby, trained in Shakespearean roles in the 1930's and perfected in radio dramatic parts in the 1940's, has become a well-known sound on Broadway, in motion pictures, and on television, where as Harriet Van Horne has observed, he is "the most sensitive and knowing narrator in the business." His most appreciative audience, however, is found among the nearly 80,000 borrowers of Talking Books, the recordings of literature produced under the supervision of the Division for the Blind of the Library of Congress for the use of the legally blind. Scourby, who has recorded about 300 books for the blind, has described this as "the one work that really means something to me." Nelson Coon, a former regional librarian in the Library of Congress' program for the blind, has observed in the letters column of the Saturday Review (September 9, 1961): "The dependence on and satisfaction in the voice of Alexander Scourby among blind people is something you would not believe unless you had been a librarian."

3.0 out of 5 stars Expected more options... August 17, 2007
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is basically a put into DVD player, turn on and play with options only to play entire book, or play entire chapter. I expected it to be able to navigate through chapters with more ease and for it to have more interactive features.

For the narration, it gets 5 stars. I purchased because of Alexander Scourby's voice, my parents had the cassette tapes for ages and I always popped one in when I wanted to take a break from reading. His voice made "reading" the Bible a lot more interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just A Suggestion for Buyers... January 3, 2009
I am posting this comment in response to some of the "negative" reviews given here. :) Before deciding to purchase any Bible on DVD product, do a bit of careful reading and research first to understand the versions and features available. There really is a wide variety of these items, and no doubt each one offers its targeted audiences what they need. My recommendation: If the version on this page captures your interest, please check out the Bibles on DVD: Alexander Scourby - King James Version SIGNATURE Edition (2008) before you make your final choice. The Signature version seems to offer some features (like dramatic Bible story reading) that some reviewers had said were lacking and / or imperfect in this standard version. The Signature Version includes a 52 Week Study Guide, a cool Q&A game, 33 dramatized Bible stories beyond the strict narration of the text, and a Holy Land Photo Tour. When purchasing a DVD product, MY CHOICE: I actually selected the Signature Version over the product listed on this page because of the less than enthusiastic reviews below and because the features on the Signature Version appealed to our product wants. So, I was very satisfied with the Signature version. // If you are interested in investigating these products, there is a great website that discusses the variety of these Bible on DVD product. For the product mentioned on this page, please visit the following page to see some helpful info: [...]: Apparently some folks prefer strict narration of the biblical text without all the sound effects, and some folks prefer a more robust audio experience that is rendered with many voices and sound coloring. 5.0 out of 5 stars The best you can find of it's type! January 2, 2008
This product is the best of it's type that you can get today. If you want the King James Version (even if you prefer others) and if you adore the voice of Alexander Scourby, then you will be very enriched with this product. It is not perfect, but it does an excellent job of going through the text of the Bible with understanding and clairty.

It is NOT software so don't expect it to behave like software. I love the fact that I can have it on as I am doing other work and pop my head in now and then to review the text whilst it is being read. Scourby has such wonderful inflections that it is easy to be drawn to pay attention.

One thing you will note in this DVD series: The voice will be speeded up from time to time as is the practice to fit audio into limited space. It can also be slowed down to streach and fit where needed. This doesn't really impeed the listening but is noticable.

Mostly of all ... Enjoy it and be blessed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! June 16, 2008
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I bought this DVD for my husband as a birthday gift. He already had several others and they were good, but he liked the voice appeal of Alexander Scourby. I have to agree with him that this DVD is the best of the best. Perhaps it is because we were so familiar with Mr. Scourby's voice from the CD's, or perhaps he is just anointed to do a top-notch job of reading God's Word and at the same time coating it with warmth and comfort. This is a wonderful DVD series and one that I am proud to recommend. God's Word is always a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! March 19, 2009
By J. P.
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I use this almost every night as I read through my yearly Bible. It helps me to keep focused, especially when reading books that are harder to concentrate on, such as Leviticus. This two-DVD set is a real blessing in my Bible study.

I've been listening to Alexander Scourby for almost thirty years now. He was such an excellent reader; it's hard to switch to anyone else.

I also suggest the Bible on DVD to listen to in the car. Do you want to build your faith? Well, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Bible on DVD! January 10, 2009
By Pete B.
Of all the audio Bibles available, Alexander Scourby's version is the best. This DVD features the entire recording along with numbered chapters and verses. You can skip to a book or an individual chapter. You can pause anywhere. The text has subtle but interesting background graphics and there's no background music. A great way to study the original King James Version Bible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Limited Options for Listener December 29, 2007
I love the voice and drama of Scourby but, you cannot pause, backup or forward. Once you select at the beginning, it is very difficult to
change chapters, reverse, pause or forward.
I am disappointed since this makes it unuseful for the morning study I
had hoped for.
