Ok. I get up in the morning and sit back in the comfy chair with a cup of joe and read the Bible from the big TV while it is being read to me. There are two DVD's, not one. Disc 1 is the old; disc 2 is the new. You can control the book and chapter with your remote control, stop, pause, or do whatever your dvd player allows. The tv screen looks like a book that is open, two pages at a time. The music is the back ground is very understated and the voice of the readers are lovely. Makes reading the Bible really easy for the busy and weary. WOW>

Not so great,

A Bible on DVD is a great idea. You get the best of both worlds: an audio Bible read by a professional orator, PLUS on-screen text so you can easily read along.
Unfortunately, this particular DVD Bible leaves much to be desired. First, there's the translation itself: The New Living Translation is adequate; but there are much better contemporary English translations out there. Second, there are the voices: Though the main narrator does a good job; the cast of actors who read the dialogue have annoying voices that quickly get on your nerves; and they tend to "overact" their parts. Third, there's the background music and sound effects: They are distracting, and don't contribute much to one's appreciation of the text. (Plus, the same music is played over and over again; so it gets old pretty quick.) Fourth, there are lots of typos in the on-screen text; the narrator occasionally skips over or misreads words; and the on-screen text doesn't always sync up with the narration (sometimes the narrator gets ahead of the on-screen text; and sometimes the on-screen text gets ahead of the narrator). Fifth, there's the navigation: You can go to the start of a specific chapter; but not to a specific verse. And you can't rewind or fast forward -- you can only skip back or forward by chapters. All in all, this is not a good DVD Bible. I hope I can find a better one.

The Bible on DVD...what a concept! We use it for family Bible study and it also a great center for conversation as new things are revealed by the Holy Spirit as His word is studied.

This is wonderful. I listen to it all the time. It makes reading the Bible exciting. Children will love listening along with you. I listen while working around the house or using my computer. I even fall asleep to it at night. It was money well spent.

I fully enjoyed how I was able to read along with the DVD in our modern language.
The format was just what I was looking for. I do recomend this to anyone who would rather follow the word of GOD on the DVD

Indeed, Amazon delivers! At first I was afraid my DVD would never arrive. The estimated delivery date was October 5, but the Brazilian Mail only sent my package on November 28. So, if you intent to bring this item to Brazil through standard mail be prepared to wait and pay a 60% import tax (I recently bought Ilumina Premium using DHL and the delivery was much faster).
Although the narrator's voice is very pleasant, it is fast-paced. This shortcoming was already mentioned in another review and I endorse it. Since the video presentation is rather static, showing the text as an open book, I close my eyes and enjoy the audio (which is fast paced, you don't even notice the narrator's breathing). So, it was an interesting experience, the NLT is very good, and I hope future releases adress the audio speed more carefully.

Overall the DVD is great. Although some books in the New Testament are read to fast. It is like sitting down to a wonderfull meal that needs to be enjoyed with every bite. The type of meal you need to savor. Insteed you eat it in 60 seconds. That is not the right thing to do.

A few years ago we bought a number of different audio Bibles on CD, hoping our not-enthusiastic-reader kids would listen to them. I found that for me, some of the other dramatized versions were extremely distracting both in the voices and in the background music. While this one is occasionally so, Steven Johnston's reading is clear, articulate, and enjoyable. I can't even count how many times I have listened to the entire New Testament using this DVD, usually just by playing it when I get up & dressed in the morning & when I go to bed at night. I am VERY grateful for this reasonably priced option for hearing the Word of God.
The format of getting to various chapters & verses can indeed be somewhat awkward & time-consuming, but advances in technology have come so quickly that that sort of issue could be easily taken care of in future versions. I hope that it will also be available someday as an MP3 download, so that one could listen to it from their I-phones or I-pods, etc, for mobilities' sake. The written script showing up on the screen is very plain-Jane for this day & age, but I use the DVD's primarily for the audio portion. That being said, the fact that the entire New Testament is able to be put in it's entirely on ONE disk &, in the case of the Old & New Testament version, the entire Old Testamentis on another disk, is of great benefit. It would require a very bulky package of CD's if they were used instead of DVD's. For daily listening to a 15 minute portion of Old & New Testaments, as well as Psalms & Proverbs (eventually covering the entire Bible in a year's time), I recommend the free podcast of Daily Audio Bible. It is great for a quick listen on a regular basis & is readily portable. (But you can't just keep going with the passages for more than 15 minutes like you can with these DVD's. You have to wait for the next day.) I've given a number of these sets as gifts & highly recommend them for the place they fill in this genre. |
