5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT Study Bible!, May 20, 2004

This review is from: Holy Bible Wide Margin Center-Column Reference Edition (Nkjv) (Leather Bound)
I disagree with the reviews stating that this is not a good study Bible. The "Study Bibles" of today are packed with commentaries, application, notes, charts, helps, etc, etc. While these may shed some light on the Scriptures, you are limited to the findings of other Bible scholars, and what the Spirit may have revealed to them. There is nothing necessarily wrong with that if their statements are scripturally sound, but there is nothing like having the Holy Spirit speak directly to you through His Word alone. Sit down with this Bible, and make all the notes you want in it-- there's plenty of room! Compare Scripture with Scripture and not with commentaries. Have a concordance on hand and you're ready for a REAL first hand study of the Bible.

As far as the construction of the book itself... The first thing I noticed was the weak binding. I am easily annoyed by the tendency of a weak binding to crack, and "favor" opening to certain pages. (A solution to this is to spread a thick layer of Weldwood contact cement on some thick paper or cardboard, and carefully slide it under the cover onto the binding. Don't open it for at least a week. Eventually the binding will be quite solid!). It's not very "fashionable" -- no genuine English calfskin here. It's a big black hardcover tome with a gold "HOLY BIBLE" on the front, which may be "old school" for some. I keep it at home and take a compact NKJV with me everywhere else.

The paper is a little thicker than regular Bible paper, and it really doesn't bleed, even with a regular hilighter. I mostly use an 0.5mm pencil, or a Micron 005 (0.2mm) super fine pen.

All that said, the only REAL advantage this Bible has is the wide margins, of which there aren't many in print. I recommend this Bible over any modern Study Bible available today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Daily Reader or Devotional Bible, May 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Holy Bible Wide Margin Center-Column Reference Edition (Nkjv) (Leather Bound)
It's been my experince that a perfect study Bible is impossible to find. The Wide Margin New King James Bible is NOT a good study Bible, but a GREAT daily reader or for daily devotions. The margin size screams for notes to be written, allowing over a inch of writing space surrounding the text. The alternative renderings and literal translation notes are very helpful - placed in a center column reference section. The translation is easy to understand and read, written at a level that makes it a good childrens' Bible as well.

The lack of helps, book and chapter introductions, is what makes this Bible such a great daily reader or for devotions. Nothing is there to distract you from your time with the Lord in His Word.

If you are looking for a Study Bible, this isn't it. If you are looking for a Bible to write notes, underline, highlight, or use another marking sytem (it doesn't use really thin pages so there won't be any problem with highlighter marker bleeding through), this Bible may be exactly what you are looking for.

The best study Bible ever on the market, even though the publisher discontinued it years ago. The ideal study Bible for the serious minded student of the scriptures. Would recommend this Bible to anyone, if you can still find it.
