This review is from: Holy Bible Tniv (Hardcover)
"The first concern of the translators has continued to be the accuracy of the translation and its faithfulness to the intended meaning of the biblical writers...accurate communication of the meaning of the biblical authors demands constant regard for varied contextual uses of words and idioms and for frequent modifications in sentence structures"--The Committee on Bible Translation.

TNIV excels in the task of rendering timeless truths in contemporary English. All living languages evolve over time. Changes in semantics, sentence structure, and cultural sensitivities can cause even the most recent of translations to lose much of their accuracy. TNIV contains many enhancements to its predecessor (the NIV). Its publication has not been without controversy. More specifically, if a Greek word is neuter then TNIV doesn't assume a masculine declension in English--as do most Bibles. For example, Hebrews 13 opens with the word "FILADELFIA", which describes a reciprocal, sibling-like affection. The NIV renders it, "Keep on loving each other as brothers" while its successor (TNIV) uses "Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters". The Apostle Paul lists ten lifestyles that preclude one from inheriting the kingdom of heaven. One such lifestyle is "ARSENOKOITAI" (1 Cor 6:9). The NIV renders this "homosexual offenders", hinting that an orientation can be sinful. TNIV renders it "practising homosexuals", thus emphasising that it is same gender INTIMACY--not orientation--that offends God. When one has gay friends or colleagues, such distinctions are helpful when trying to share with them the message of hope from a loving, compassionate God. It's also a more accurate rendition of the original Greek.

As for presentation, Hodder & Stoughton never disappoint! It's all tastefully designed and well bound with a mauve finish. This large print edition is 24cm long and weighs 1400g, so I use it for general Bible reading in my Living Room or garden. I own a lighter and more compact edition for the bedside locker - also published by Hodder & Stoughton (check out ISBN 9780340909850 & its reviews).
