1.0 out of 5 stars Un-heroic hero
I had hoped a learning-challenged protagonist would be a great example for my son. I had hoped the Hank Zipzer books would be hilarious and inclusive, proving that no matter what personality or learning pattern you have, you can be the hero of the story. I have been sadly disappointed. If the disparaging remarks made about almost every character in the book (smart kids,...

I am an elementary teacher who just wrapped up third grade. I read the Hank Zipzer series aloud to my class this year and they all agreed this was their favorite. At one point, we were laughing so loud that a colleage stuck her head in the classroom to make sure we were okay. All of these books kept the kids interested, made them laugh, and got many of them reading them independently after I had read it to them! One of our class catch phrases this year was, in the words of Frankie, "right, and my name is Bernice." Many of my students could relate to Hank's learning challenges and felt better knowing it was "okay" to struggle! Hats off to Henry Winkler and Hank!

5.0 out of 5 stars Winkler cooks up great reading for everybody, September 21, 2004
This review is from: Holy Enchilada! (Hank Zipzer, 6) (Paperback)
Having more than my own share of number mix ups, I REALLY appreciated getting a chance to browse this book.

I am well out of the natural target range for this series, but was definently in many of the sittuations described in this series. We have good intentions, but confusion makes the sittuation look like somebody has misbehaved or simply did not care about anything.

When it would have been easier to talk over (and down to his audience) Winkler instead demonstrates natural empathy.

Because math is hard for Hank, he has accidentally mis-measured the ingredients in the enchilada recipe---which ironically he had originally thought was better than the 'traditional' school assingments. Everything is worked out in the end though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hank , the 4th grader, March 3, 2011

This review is from: Holy Enchilada! (Hank Zipzer, 6) (Paperback)
Yet another great addition to the Hank Zipzer series. This story is fun to read! Kids will laugh out loud!

The plot shortly: Hank and his classmates have to make a dish for International Day at school. Hank makes an enchilada from Mexico, but he's not very good with fractions. A third of a cup of chili peppers turns into three cups... and the teacher eats Hank's dish and ... you can guess what happens!!!

About the main character: Hank has difficulty learning in school because he has dyslexia. This is the sixth book in the series, and the title character now knows that he learns differently from many of his classmates.

About the book series and the writers: These books are written for all children from the third through sixth grades, but they are particularly meaningful to those with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. The books are co-written with Henry Winkler (Fonzie) and Lin Oliver, a writer and producer of movies, books and television for children and families.
The authors were able to successfully balance the setting of the school with Hank's home life. It explored successfully the everyday lives of 4th grade students as they move between the two worlds.

By the way, don't get mixed up with the title of this book: this has book different titles in different states, so don't reorder even if you see another enchilada story in this series (it is still the same one)!

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read!, May 19, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Holy Enchilada! (Hank Zipzer, 6) (Paperback)
The best book I've ever read is "Holy Enchilada". It is about a boy named Hank Zipzer and his school having a foreign exchange student from Japan to come to their school for a few days. So everyone decides to make the school look fancy for him. The kid needs somewhere to stay so Hank decides to let him stay at his house. The first night that he stays, they don't have anything to do so they start to make enchiladas for the Multi-Cultural Food Days at school. Hank starts to have trouble reading the recipe for how much zing to put in the enchiladas, and thinks he put to much in them, and everything gets worse from there. I
really liked this book because I can relate to the character and I understand him well. I would recommend this book to fourth graders and up.

But I still can't believe that Hank got the chance for Yousi to come over! But over all this was my favorite book of all time. This book was sooo funny and entertaining. Believe me you'll love it!

I had hoped a learning-challenged protagonist would be a great example for my son. I had hoped the Hank Zipzer books would be hilarious and inclusive, proving that no matter what personality or learning pattern you have, you can be the hero of the story. I have been sadly disappointed. If the disparaging remarks made about almost every character in the book (smart kids, teachers, even bullies) are what make a person a hero, I'd rather my son find another hero. I am a book lover and have no problem with unconventional and authority challenging books (the Captain Underpants series, for instance), but I am literally throwing these books in the trash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Enchilada! They've done it again., August 3, 2010
This review is from: Holy Enchilada! (Hank Zipzer, 6) (Paperback)
Yet another great addition to the Hank Zipzer series. Kids will love to see what happens to Hank, a 4th grade boy that has just won the chance to have the school's Japanese exchange student stay at his house. The book is hilarious, in true Hank style, from the iguana sticking to the kitchen floor with wallpaper paste to his teacher farting her way out of the room. At the same time, readers will be sympathetic for Hank when they see what he goes through as a dyslexic student. This book will keep students engaged, as well as show them a realistic story about a boy with a learning disability. I've read books in this series with my class before and this one (book 6) is just as wonderful as the others and will be added to my classroom library next year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Explosive fun, October 30, 2009
This review is from: Holy Enchilada! (Hank Zipzer, 6) (Paperback)
What kind of trouble can Hank Zipzer get into when his school is hosting a multi-cultural day? All kinds. In this segment of the adventures of Hank, his friends and family the Zipzers, are selected to host a visiting international student. Yoshi Morimoto and his Father are from PS87's sister school in Tokyo and are visiting schools in America. The visit coincides with PS87's multicultural day.

The problems begin when the gang, Hank, Frankie, Ashley and Yoshi try to make enchiladas and the task of reading the recipe falls on Hank. With his dyslexia he struggles with the fractions, and the enchiladas end up with a lot of zing. Once again Hank learns that telling the truth is the best way to go. A good story in a great series.
