One of hip hop's most overlooked, underrated albums ever.,

True, they brought consciousness, but PRT also brought a style unlike anyone elses at the time(props to YZ also). Wise Intelligent had one of the dopest flows... If you claim to like REAL hip hop, or you wanna be an m.c., you need to check this out.

PRT put a twist of conscious thought into rap/hip-hop and they actually made you contemplate much deeper issues than the typical rap music. It is too bad I cannot purchase this on amazon.com!!

The initial recording of the conscious man's group, Poor Righteous Teachers, Holy Intellect sets the stage for each of the group's brilliant subsequent efforts. A definite classic, this album expands hip-hop mental state through 5 percent wisdom, positive mental energy, and pure funky msical sensibilities. Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom, and Father Shaheed lift hip-hop to a conscious plateau enjoyed by only a few others in the current music industry. With hip-hop's meteoric financial success comes industry copycats, wannabees, and hangers-on. PRT flips the script on the trend 180 degrees, and is a must have for the mind, body, and spirit of any true hip-hop head. Check out Pure Poverty, Black Business, and New World Order.

At the heart of the early ninties growth of rap into hip-hop,

A trio of fury, the Poor Righteous Teachers, self proclaimed PRT, were among a group of acts which hit the early ninties rap scene overnight. Most notable for the MTV video, "Rock This Funky Joint", PRT sold Holy Intellect and become part of rap's mainsteam list of acts which could hit the suburbs all the way from the ghetto. With a hard edged sound, samples from Bob Marley, and a lead with a quick ryhming toungue, "Holy Intellect" is the album which put PRT on the scene. This effort has not been equalled by the act yet; and re-aquiring the disk though Amazon.com seven years after I bought it in 1991, "Holy Intellect" still sounds as fresh ever. Other notable tracks include: Butt Naked Bootie Bless and the title track, Holy Intellect.

This album is pure dope. It is increddible from beginning to end and they had hits off of it and then they had some great flows off of it and the beats are what you would call slamming."Rock dis Funkee Joint" is a classic and so are most of the songs off this great LP from The Poor Righteous Teachers

An instant fan,

I first heard this on BET Hip-Hop and on Music Choice when they did the song "Rock Dis' Funky Joint". I never even heard none of this since I got into instantly. I knew I was never gon be a rap fan until I was ready to revisit that some more.
Anyway, as I was saying PRT have some of the best grooves on this album since the rappers of today put out theirs D'Nice, Main Source, Dana Dane, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane, Special Ed, Lord Finesse, Kwame the Boy Genius, The Jungle Brothers, The Pharcyde, Brand Nubian, Stetsasonic, and many others. I recommend this album to those who wants to revisit the early days of hip-hop and now. There's no reason for you to miss out stuff like this. It'll take u far as it was since my parents raised me in all types of music at an early age.

Finding groups like Poor Righteous Teachers is like finding a ruby inside of a bunch of pebbles, not too often to come by. Poor Righteous Teachers, whcih consisted of Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom, and DJ Father Shaheed, kicked 5% knowledge all over this album, and they managed to do it in many ways. Either in your face style, like on "Style Dropped/Lessons Taught", and on "So Many Teachers" (dope sample too). Or by having fun, like the party sounding "Rock Dis Funky Joint". Or towards females on the love joint "Shakiyla". Or even freestyle mode as in their group name track. No matter what, they do what they have to do to spread knowledge to their listeners.
Straight up, this album came out back in 1990, when rap was all about making people listen as the artist tries to get their message across. Similar albums that came out in 1990 such as Brand Nubian's One for All and X-Clan's To the East, Blackwards all had similar concepts as this LP has. No wack tracks what so ever, just pure knowledge. Unfortunately every PRT album is out of print, and the prices are tremendous. If you can, try to get your hands on any album that they have made in their career. Peace.
