This review is from: Holy Maid of Kent (Hardcover)
While there are some excellent maps and excerpts from original letters that you will not find anywhere else, Neame does not ever develop the title personage. Instead we get to hear about what everyone else thought of her, but no scholarly conjecture about Barton herself. Lest you think the author is a serious historian above comitting conjecture, his superstition is very clear whenever he talks about visions, prophecies, possessions and archangels as absolute fact. He also has quite a bone to pick about the English Reformation--he sounds as upset as though it happened last year. There's also a bit too much archictural description, what kind of dung the walls were made of, etc. Skim it.
