While writing my sci/fi fantasy trilogy based on the Navajo, I spent significantly more time on research than I did writing. What a wonderful experience, learning about the Navajo history, culture, challenges and successes--they are the only tribe who still live on their ancestral land. Of all the books I read this is by the far the best. The insights gained into the depth and breadth of Navajo beliefs astounded me. There is no word for "religion" in the Navajo language--if there was it would be "life". Their reverence for all life, ancestors, and understanding of their place in the universe is quite unique. Quite different from the one-day-a-week religious atmosphere among many Christians. The explanation of the Holy Wind, a deeply complex philosophy, was crucial in my writing, and handled beautifully and reverently. Loved the book.
