4.0 out of 5 stars Template for modern change, November 2, 2005

I've read this book for the second time and find it more profitable the second go 'round. Its a great resource for ministers and those interested in the revival of their faith or that of their church body.

There are many "case studies" of Finney's experiences and life stories. There are also many templates for us to apply in ministry today.

The underlying strengths of Finney are seen throughout the book. Prayer, great understanding of scripture, and a radical reliance on the Holy Spirit are exactly what the church needs today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The power of God at work, January 3, 2008

This review is from: Holy Spirit Revivals (Paperback)
I was impressed with the accounts of Finney's labors, especially the ones where he goes into details of the great conviction of sin, and power of God that attended his preaching. We can learn much from these examples in presenting the gospel to the lost today. He was straight with people and called sin-sin, but he also loved people enough to tell them the truth so they had a chance to be saved. This book is hard to put down.

You may never find another book like this, considering the methods of "love" we use today in attempts to bring people to salvation. Charles Finney went to measures not seen today, as he would bring conviction through the Word to those who were not in Christ and made disciples out of them. Today, we see the numbers of converts, but Finney saw discipleship as his goal.
Since he was trained as a lawyer, God used this training as a tool for discussion with those in opposition to Christ, and many times the case was won for Christ. This book exemplifies the revivals in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and even London. How much different and successful he was in these methods that many believe his success rate was around 93%, today we brag about 10%. You want to see a new light on methods not taught today (many afraid of offending), read this book. My last one the last pages ripped, so I ordered another so I may get the chance to re-read it again and again. How we need people who will tell it like it is.

Finney did, and was never in fear, and God reaped the rewards with many coming to Christ.

The theology of Finney is the only theology that is consistant with the principles of revival both for the individual and for the community (nation).
