Lemmings Racing for the Edge, July 8, 2003
This review is from: Holy War: The Rise of Militant Christian, Jewish and Islamic Fundamentalism (Paperback)
This is one of the most frightening books I have read lately. The main thesis is that the three monotheistic fundamentalisms are conspiring to bring about Armageddon, the nuclear holocaust that will end the world as we know it and may extinguish all human life on earth - all in the name of God. I'm sure God would be proud.
Christian Fundamentalists are demanding the U. S. support Israel in it's land-grab of Yeretz Israel, land covering the area from the "great river of Egypt" through most if not all of Lebanon, all of Syria and Jordan, and parts of Iraq and Iran. The fundamentalist Christians believe when Israel occupies all this land and the Jews have rebuilt the temple, Christ will come again. The fundamentalist Jews believe when they rebuild the Temple the Messiah will come. The Palestinians say if anyone screws with the two Islamic Shrines on the Temple mount they will start WWIII. All three of these scenarios play straight into fundamentalist beliefs and the fundamentalists are working hard to make them happen. The truly astonishing thing is they may be successful. Each believing it is by the "will of God".
Despite the fact this is a real page-turner I gave it four stars. There are problems with it's technical execution, especially in the first chapters, but its message could not be more clearly stated, and the urgency and sheer lunacy more powerfully presented. This is a book EVERYONE should read and take to heart. Humans are never so deadly as when working God's will. Of course, as usual in such circumstances, humans are not the hand of God as much as they are forcing God's hand, and when they play that game it always ends badly.
