Eamon Nancarrow had a dream. He, like so many others, wanted to be a rock star. This is Eamon's story - of a journey with a good many twists and turns, heaps of humour, litres of alcohol, and some interesting experiences along the way.
Eamon Nancarrow began his life in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland in 1965. Eamon grew up on a council estate and does a fine job of setting the scene in which he grew up: the social state of a country disrupted by the Troubles; a stable loving home; and an increasing fascination with music. Eamon started as an errand boy, progressed to band member of numerous bands, and was surely destined for rock and roll fame. Except, sometimes things didn't go quite the way they were planned.

`There was worse to come.'

There are stories of good and bad roadtrips; of successful and unsuccessful gigs; of fights; of love affairs - all accompanied by some interesting fashion statements and copious quantities of alcohol. Eamon's enduring friendship with Ken Heaven, and the important role of Xan Phillips: what a journey!

So, what makes Eamon's journey different from any other aspiring rock star? I think that it's not so much the journey as Eamon's recounting of it. His ability to see the humour and to not take himself too seriously has undoubtedly turned what might have been an ordinary tale (well, ordinary by aspiring rock and roll standards) into an extraordinary one. Along the way, Eamon makes some great friends with home he shares some hilarious moments. This book is filled with laugh out loud anecdotes, especially funny to those who didn't have to experience some of the happenings described. It's fine craic indeed.

Eamon Nancaroow pursued his dream but didn't let it become a nightmare.

Holywood Star has turned out to be one of the best Rock autobiographies I've ever had the good fortune to stumble over. It stands in the same league with Diary of a Rock-n-Roll Star, the Dirt, and Full Moon - I kid you not. The writing is laugh-so-hard-you-wake-the-spouse-and-scare-the-pets hilarious. I read in bed while my husband sleeps and there were many times I had to clap my hand over my mouth to keep from shrieking out loud at some of the anecdotes. How Eamonn Nancarrow managed to live the full-on Rock and Roll experience and manage to keep all of his limbs, I don't know. From hard partying, to run-ins with skinheads, to brushes with sectarian violence, he somehow lived to tell the tale, and I'm so glad he did. The best and the worst of human nature is here, captured in 350 pages of brutally honest, Father Ted-meets-Spinal Tap awesomeness. This one will be a keeper on my Kindle for a long time to come.

It pains me to write this review. After reading this in its entirety, I think the author is a nice guy, but I'd be lying if said his memoir of being in a band that never rose above the local club circuit (no recording contract/no concerts) was interesting. I think he finds it interesting but it actually is a dime a dozen story. I traveled the club circuit when I had a guitarist boyfriend and I have better stories than Eamon Nancarrow. He tries too hard to be funny. I got the impression he finds so many of his stories 'amusing' but for a rock band, there isn't any real hilarity about the situations they found themselves in. The band went through life drunk off stage and on....it gets old very quickly. I hope he had as good a time as he claims because for the reader...not so good. There is the hint of desperation to be funny, the failure to win fame, respect or a following. Perhaps, Mr. Nancarrow is too nice a guy...most people who want to be rock stars can't afford to be nice people as they try to claw their way above the thousands upon thousands of other bands going for the same prize. I felt sorry for him. The more I read, the more sorry I felt. That does not make for a good book unless you are aiming for pity and he clearly was not.

This book is a great read. It's so well written that my eyes pour over the words with ease. I can't put it down.

It's so freakin' funny. From the early tales to the more mature stages in life, everything has a laugh. Not only his it hilarious, but it's so real. It's a story we all can relate to. I lay in bed at night and giggle out loud. My husband is continually saying, "What!? WHAT!?" I can't say. He just has to wait until I've finished.

While being really funny, it's also full of life's ups and downs.

If you think this book isn't for you because it's about "Rock & Roll," forget that. It's a great tale about an interesting life.

Just stop reading this and buy the darn thing already!
