Bob Mintzer states on the sleeve that it was one of his "most fun recording experience". It fully comes through to the listener's ears. I have to admit I'm not objective at all: Mintzer is one of my favorites, both as a "horn" and a Big Band (I have all his DMP releases). But I'm also an absolute Basie fan... Therefore this CD couldn't do any wrong ! But still: it exceeds any expectation you could have. Mintzer succeeded in not trying to just re-record a clean, modern and digital Basie sound: it is definitly Mintzer. But he perfectly captures the laidback Basie feeling. My preferred track is the first, "Havin' Some Fun", which is a Mintzer original: typical 120 bpm swing, Nestico-/Thad Jones-/Foster-ish ensembles, a rythm which also reminds me of the Jones/Lewis Orchestra, great solos by the Boss himself and RR on the bari, some juicy sax soli... What else dream of ? The re-arranged Basie classics are also great, most with a slight touch of pensive nostalgia. If I could keep only one of Mintzer's DMP albums, it would be this one. Thanks, Bob Mintzer ! When will it be possible to listen to the Band live here in Europe ?

The fifth time is the charm for this talented player, arranger, leader and educator! The saxophonist for the Yellowjackets is recognized for his own project with his first GRAMMY AWARD! This CD smokes!

I enjoyed this album. Bob clearly did his homework in crafting the arrangements of classic Basie tunes. He didn't just copy Basie charts, but added a little "Mintzerizing." He also contributed some original compositions. 'Having Some Fun' is right in the Basie pocket, but 'Home Basie' departs into a funk groove -- it's a nice change of pace. I also like the recording -- direct to 2 track. We're getting a live performance from the studio here, not a multitracked, perfected, punched in thing. If you want to hear the Basie orchestra, buy a Basie CD. But if you like the Basie style and want to hear a tasteful modern take on it, buy "Homage to Count Basie" and enjoy!
