4.0 out of 5 stars Homage To Peace, May 29, 2008
This review is from: Homage to Peace (Reis) (Dig) (Audio CD)
Approximately 44 min. Remastered. This is truly "outside"music played by musicians who are searching for that "mythical" something. Made up of two Americans, two Japanese and one Frenchman, this music is truly international. At times you get the impression that the music just seems to wander until all of the sudden it seems to all make sense. This music was recorded in Paris,France in 1970-an era when jazz was searching for something beyond what was then being played. The group consists of Glenn Spearman-soprano and tenor sax,Takashi Kako-piano,Boulou Ferret-electic guitar, Bob Reid-double bass and Sabu Toyozumi-drums. The compositions are a combination of "free"playing and actual written material. This is music where one needs to pick out the different instruments in a composition and relate it to all the others. In doing so,the music begins to make a weird kind of sense and is very satisfying. Perhaps the fact that this is a live recording has something to do with the sound the musicians are trying to convey to the audience. This is certainly "thinking" jazz as opposed to whatever a person might wish jazz to be. Not for the squeemish, this puts a bit of spin on the brain. Isn't that what good jazz is supposed to do?
