This review is from: Hombres De Tango, De Puro Guapo, La Comparista (Audio CD)
In fact, before I accidentaly ran into this CD here. I have been thinking that it is out of print...It was a pleasure to know that it is still available. Unfortunately it is not the case with the majority of recordings of Roberto Grela. It happened so that due to popularity of the "big" sound of Orquestas Tipicas in 1930s - 1950s, guitar became a forgotten instrument in tango. Once very important, its sound would have been lost in the lineup of four bandoneons, at least four violins, piano, bass plus sometimes viola, or cello... The tradition was broken. The whole generation of tangueros was formed unacustomed to the sound of guitar in tango. Then came Roberto Grela. All the other important guitarists of tango appeared later, and were to different extent his students. It is impossible to underestimate his importance to the tango music. Comeback of guitar into the world of tango was initiated by one person. And, it was not only a comeback of an instrument, Roberto Grela played with style, brilliance and perhaps has very few rivals even today, 28 years after his death. Recorded heritage of Roberto Grela is still waiting for its researcher, who will discover more and more recordings and my be publish multivolumed "Obras Integrales". In the meantime there are two albums available. This one and "Taconeando", which documents one of two legendary sessions' sets with "El bandoneon mayor de Buenos Aires" Anibal Troilo in 1953 - 1955. Each track here is a gem. Buy, play, sit, listen... |
