3.0 out of 5 stars If you're a fan of the score...
..then it's advisable leave this edition be and get the score to the sequel as it contains all the same themes only better. I'm not talking about the Album or the standard score release that has been available for many years. I mean the brand new Varese Sarabande limited edition Home Alone 2 score on 2-discs with a massive booklet containing loads of info about John...

What most people remember about the movie HOME ALONE is the slapstick comedy. Funny stuff to be sure but what made the film work so well was it's underlying drama. Director John Hughes set the story during the Christmas season to further exploit the drama of being seperated from your loved ones. For all the antics involved, HOME ALONE is first and foremost a Christmas movie. This setting gave composer John Williams the chance to write some of his most charming and festive music ever. The score is built upon William's lovely "Somewhere In My Memory" (lyrics by Leslie Bricusse) which was given a deserved oscar nomination. Here is a song that is a contemporary Christmas classic and should be a perrenial favorite. Here is an album that should be under every soundtrack and Christmas music lover's tree. It's one gift that is guaranteed to give years of enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Music, November 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Home Alone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This CD is absolutely great! I love Home Alone, it is my favorite, and in my opinion the next best Christmas movie of all time after Its a Wonderful Life. It is my favorite Christmas movie though. If you were born between the years of 1980 and 1985, this is one of THE movies of your childhood (The Mighty Ducks and The Goonies come in around there too). This is one of the movies of the 90's that will always be remembered as a 90's movie. Anyways, the CD is great. I love the music from the movie. The main theme/opening titles is just wonderful, magical Christmasy sounding music, almost reminiscent of the nutcracker suite thing. Somewhere in my Memory is a beautiful origional Christmas Carol for the movie that almost brings tears to my eyes when I hear it (I'm a man, I can't admit to crying because of a song). The Christmas songs (like White Christmas, I'll be Home for Christmas, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, etc) are great classics. This CD puts together great Classic Christmas songs with traditional Christmas Carols, an origional Carol made just for the movie, and great movie music. Its a must have if you like Christmas music or are a kid from the 90's and grew up watching Home Alone on NBC every Thanksgiving as I have. Merry Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, in season, and out!, December 17, 1999

I must totally agree with the previous reviwers, about the beauty of this soundtrack. Much is said about Williams well known "Star "Wars", "E.T.", and "Superman" scores; but this (And the second one as well) beat all of them in my opinion. While the music in definitely Christmasy in nature, it is very pretty, and can be enjoyed all throughout the year. About the only Williams score I like better is "Jurassic Park", which benefits from a main theme that will never be beaten in beauty, and majesty, in my opinion. As for "Home Alone" though, I definitely recomend getting it, and "Lost in New York" as well. You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars DEFINETELY LINGERS 'SOMEWHERE IN MY MEMORY', October 29, 2001
This review is from: Home Alone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I've seen the movie lots and lots of times in my life, and I KNOW what most of this CD sounds like. The songs in their entirety may not be played, but the score is heard throughout the whole movie. When you hear it, you find yourself in the Christmas mood already: checking out lights lit on the houses on a winter's night, listening to old-fashioned church bells, picturing the shopping malls filled with shoppers preparing for the big day, sitting in front of a fire in the fireplace drinking hot chocolate, looking at the snow, and that's not even close to all! 'Somewhere In My Memory' is a timeless classic that is just bonded to the holiday season itself!

"Candles in the window_ ,
shadows painting the ceiling_ ,
gazing at the fire_ glow_ ,
feeling that gingerbread feeling_ .

Precious moments_ ,
special people_ ,
happy faces
I can see_ .

Somewhere in my mem-'ry_ ,
Christmas joys all around_ me_ ,
living in my mem-'ry_ ,
all of the music_ ,
all of the magic_ ,
all of the fam'ly_
home_
here_ with_ me____ . . . . "

In addition, this movie has a magnificent score heard throughout the movie. You can find it here. Also included, is Mel Torme's version of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas', and Southside Johnny's 'Please Come Home For Christmas'.

If you like the sounds of a magnificent orchestra, synthesizer, and church bells, this is the score for you. Celebrate the birth of Christ with this soundtrack, serve Him, and linger "Somewhere In Someone Else's Memory". How's that for a change?

Until then, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, November 17, 2001
By
Joan K. Swanson (Glassboro, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Home Alone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
John Williams is by far my favorite composer in Hollywood and I really did enjoy this movie. So I guess I am basically as biased as one can get! I apologize in advance for that. This score is one of the great holiday scores of all time. The score is beautiful with moments of playfulness, surprise, and even a little creepiness (the opening little music box figure). However, I think it is absolutely necessary to comment on the songs on this album. I am not talking about the standard Christmas songs, although they do put you back into the movie when listening to them. I am referring to Williams' two masterpieces "Star of Bethlehem" and "Somewhere in my Memory." These are easily two of Williams' best songs and they both capture Christmas perfectly in their own unique way. This score has too much great music to be overlooked.

I'm a guy in my 20's, yet when I hear this soundtrack, something connects in my heart, & I feel like a child again. That the world is wonderful & everything is okay. I was a child when I first saw the film & it still has an impact on me to this day. The magical feelings of Christmas as a child!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Must, July 23, 2003
By
This review is from: Home Alone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
A fun blend of vocal/instrumental Christmas music. I have had it for several years, and have never grown tired of it.
The vocal selections are some of my favorites. From the do-op version of White Christmas, to Mel Torme's smooth vocals on Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; I find myself singing along to all of them.
There are several instrumental tracks that aren't necessary Christmas songs. However, thanks to the music mastery of John Williams you can't go wrong with those tracks either.
