Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Deaf society, says Schein, is worth studying since it offers society more than it takes from it culturally. This comprehensive work was written during Schein's year (1986-1987) as Chair of Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University. Interesting and insightful, the book explores every aspect of the deaf community--culture, family life, education, and economics. In the latter part of the book, Schein proposes his theory of deaf community development based on five factors: demography, alienation, affiliation, education, and milieu. Especially interesting are the boxes offering anecdotes and real-life problems which highlight the main text. This work is more detailed, better structured, and more fluid than Oliver Sack's Seeing Voices ( LJ 7/89). Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Historical Overview, July 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: At Home Among Strangers: Exploring the Deaf Community in the United States (Hardcover)
At Home Among Strangers is a well-written historical overview of the Deaf community in America and of Deaf activism. Jerome Schein is a hearing academic who studies the Deaf community from a sympathetic but somewhat distant perspective. It contains a lot of good information about Deaf organizations and events that hearing people are largely unaware of, so if you are a hearing person who wants to learn more about the Deaf community, this isn't a bad place to start, along with other books and classes in ASL.

4.0 out of 5 stars At home among strangers, October 26, 2007
I think this book does a great job of summarizing subjects that I have read entire books on before. There is a lot of information packed into this book. It gives you a great perspective on the Deaf community in Amercia.
