Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7 Pringle shows children that all animals need their ``homes,'' be they snug underground burrows; an airy clump of bubbles; a carefully con structed nest; or merely a small, famil iar area or a wide range of space that fulfills the needs for food, courtship, or birth. The accurate text deals with North American species as disparate as caribou and spittlebugs and is divid ed into such logical sections as ``com munity homes'' and ``at home on an other.'' Some of the black-and-white photos lack crispness. A list of further readings and an index are included, as are instructions for a bluebird nesting box. Podendorf's Animal Homes (Childrens, 1982) is for a much youn ger audience, and Crump's Animal Ar chitects (National Geographic, 1987) focuses only on animal builders. Prin gle closes with a message for environ mental conservation, citing the dismal plight of Bermudian hermit crabs, who depend on ever-larger snail shells (now hunted to extinction by hungry hu mans) to protect their soft bodies.
