Format: Paperback
Strengths: The background for Steinbock's significant and worthwhile contribution is the work of Husserl. Husserl produced three large volumes that are a sustained engagement with the contribution of empathy [Einfühlung] to the phenomenology of intersubjectivity. The material for his never completed Systematic Work is rich in literally hundreds of references to empathy in both the foundation and superstructure (XV: 79f.). Since this was a work in progress that spanned his major publications from 1905 to 1935, it is impossible to say that Husserl would have changed his published position, that empathy was a part of the superstructure rather than the foundation. Empathy was never made the basis of intersubjectivity in anything published. What can be said is that the sheer volume of material, containing many gems on empathy, shows empathy's growing significance. This points to the advance of Husserl's thinking in the direction of making empathy the foundation of intersubjectivity - as well as the many challenges faced by such a revision. Its insights are excellent. For example, Leibniz's monads are windowless, but Husserl writes "Every ego is a `monad.' But the monads have windows."
Weaknesses: Unfortunately, as far as I know, this part of Husserl's work is still untranslated (though there are reportedly plans underway). The one English writer who reviewed this material is A. J. Steinbock (see Home and Beyond: Generative Phenomenology After Husserl, Evanston, IL: Northwestern University Press). Unfortunately, Steinbock considers Einfühlung to be a conceptual thicket (he is not entirely mistaken about that), mistranslates it as "intro-pathy," and focuses on the "home world" as a follow on to the "life world.
