I'm a screenwriter working in Hollywood, and I have a secret habit of reading poetry, mostly contemporary poetry. This fact is likely to annoy both the fans of Hollywood movies (he's so pretentious) and lovers of poetry (philistine!) Never the less, I felt driven to write a review of this book. "Haunting, dark and evocative" sound like cliches, and the words don't do service to how much I liked Home Burial.

These poems make connections between mind and environment, human and animal, mechanism and organ. Reading them made me feel as if I were dreaming - falling inside the world of a little painting hung on a barnyard wall, morphing into a crow, into an inky black river, into a cow, into a rusty machine. The connections and metaphors left a deep imprint on my mind, and felt honestly grateful to the poet for having written them. He seemed to find words things I've felt but couldn't name.

So if you're here on this page, I suggest you buy the book. Go ahead and click. You'll read it more than once.

McGriff has moments of absolute brilliance in this collection, moments arranged within a larger context of poems that are strong but flawed in execution as well as overshadowed by these recurrent pinnacles. McGriff has an amazing way of eloquently expressing his nuanced view of his home, his past, and his longing in these poems. He finds wonderful ways of reimagining feelings, people, and places from the words and images we typically associate with them. There is a mesmerizing dark beauty to much of this book, unfortunately the sense of the best poems doesn't carry through the entirety of the work.
