3.0 out of 5 stars I bought into the hype on The View & I'm disappointed
I am giving this book 3 stars as 3 stars means "It's ok". It is ok, but to me that's all it is. I have prepared 4 dishes from this cookbook and I have found all 4 flat, weak, and uninspiring. I am considered a very good cook by friends and family and I find the recipes I have tried quite time consuming to end up so bland. Ms Yearwood bills herself as a Southern Cook and...

I too, stumbled upon this book after watching "GMA" and "The View" on a very rare day off. After the airing of GMA, I went to their site and downloaded one of the recipes they posted. After seeing Trisha again on The View, I thought, "Let me go ahead and try this." I am a Southern cook at heart and I while I suppress it most days en lieu of a healthier lifestyle, I was so happy to find a cookbook that was pure and honest and didn't have a "Heart Healthy Alternative" section for every recipe.

This book has great ideas and they are feasible for all skill levels and income levels.

The reason I didn't give it a perfect score is because I would prefer a spiral binding so it could lay flat on a countertop or copy machine (as every dish I've tried brings on requests for the recipe). Wipeable pages would be great to clean up any drips or drops. And while most of the recipes are pretty basic, there are a few that are quite complicated (The Seven Layer Cake calls for 4 pans, a Kitchen-Aide mixer and several bowls. Yikes! That's a once-a-year recipe if I ever saw one!).

The Saltine Crackers thing was a HUGE hit and so was the baked spaghetti and asparagus bundles. Reading Garth's Breakfast Bowl made my chest hurt, but I think I'd like to try that one too!

If you want to be the Talk of the Town at your next potluck or family reunion, get this book. You'll be glad you did.

I bought this for my wife after we both saw Trisha Yearwood on The View. My wife used it from the time we got it and everything that she has made so far has been great. Very good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love This Book, May 30, 2010
This review is from: Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood: Stories and Recipes to Share with Family and Friends (Hardcover)
Unlike most of the reviewers here, I did not see "The View" and have actually never watched it. I volunteer at my local library and see many of the new books that come through. Being a cookbook lover, this one caught my eye as soon as I saw it. As I browsed through the book, I was instantly impressed with the beautiful photos of food and family. As I looked through the recipes, I saw many that I would love to try, as well as some that I would not make (but that is true with most cookbooks.) I love to eat and love to cook, but there are some food products that I do not eat such as pork products and hot or spicy foods. Nonetheless, I was interested in many of the recipes I saw and took the book home. Like some of the other reviewers, I had that "down home, good food and family" feeling as I enjoyed the stories and family memories. There was just enough information about each recipe to be interesting and memorable. I have only had the cookbook for 3 days and have made just one very simple recipe so far; the "Sweet and Saltines" which I plan to bring to a family party. Oh my goodness!! My husband and I ate a few to "sample" and they are addictive!! I did find that the caramel seeped through and coated the bottom of the crackers as well as the top, so I don't know if that is supposed to happen or not. I see no way to avoid that, for the gooey sauce will make its way through the crevices in the crackers while quickly heating up in the oven. I did find that these will melt and get soft if left out of the fridge for too long, so I have stored them in sealed containers in the fridge. After being in the fridge overnight, they were awesome the following day. This week I will be making the "Chicken Poppy Seed Salad" and "Uncle Wilson's Stuffed Peppers." One of the librarians shared that her mother made the "Key Lime Cake" for her birthday, saying it was the absolute best cake ever and that I would be the "hit of the party" if I brought it to an upcoming family function. Key lime pie is one of my all time favorite desserts, so I will definitely be making this cake soon. I will be purchasing this cookbook for my own collection.

Ms Yearwood bills herself as a Southern Cook and while these dishes are southern fare with southern ingredients they lack southern flavor.
I was most excited to try the Pork Medallions as they were The View favorite. They were a bit of work to prepare and honestly not half as good as my own recipe which is much easier.
I tried the Vegetable Pie and it was ok. I did believe it had potential so I made it a second time and doctored it up. That time it was very well received and went quickly.
Just to let you know, the first time I use a recipe I give the author the benefit of the doubt and follow it to the letter. Not one of the four recipes I have tried so far would I make again without changing them up.
I have not yet tried the Hot Corn Dip - which Whoopie loved so much she would not share - I am hoping it will be as good as it was portrayed.
I would like to add the quality of this cookbook is excellent. The pictures of the food and the family are lovely. I appreciate some of the notes that Ms Yearwood added and the stories are enjoyable, though not why I puchased the book or necessary for me to have made the purchase.
I am aware with the matter of taste there is no right or wrong, so I am only telling you how I feel (and my family & friends). You may not feel the same and I hope if you do purchase this cookbook you find then recipes to your liking. I believe I heard The View has posted a few of the recipes from the show on their website. I wish I had checked that out and tried the recipes before purchasing this book - something you might want to do.

3.0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN HER FIRST COOKBOOK, April 9, 2010
This review is from: Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood: Stories and Recipes to Share with Family and Friends (Hardcover)
I WENT TO MY LOCAL BOOK STORE AND LOOKED AT THIS BOOK. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND THE RECIPE'S. THE BOOK HAD SOME SUPER RECIPE'S THAT I WANT TO TRY. INFACT, I MADE THE ASPARAGUS BUNDLES AND THEY WERE VERY GOOD. HER COOKING IS PRETTY BASIS, WHICH IS THE SOUTHERN WAY. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR UNUSUAL RECIPE'S, THIS PROBABLY ISN'T FOR YOU. HER FIRST COOKBOOK IS REALLY, REALLY BASIS. I LOOKED AT HER FIRST COOKBOOK AND DECIDED IT'S FOR NEW COOKS. I PREFERRED THIS BOOK "HOME COOKING".

Decent recipes that if you didn't know any better (or hadn't grown up with a Southern mama who's recipes were all in her head and not in a book) taste just fine. But since I was raised on southern cooking, I noticed that everything I've made from this book so far (5 recipes) is lacking flavor. Hot corn dip: she must mean "hot" in temperature because I missed the kick there. Stuffed peppers were good in theory but were BLAND. I had extra "stuffing" that I doctored up with marinade and hot sauce and it was great. Defintely nothing I would share with company without tasting myself first.

As some other reviewers have also touched on, some recipes don't work out right even when directions are followed correctly. The icing on the strawberry cake and the mac and cheese are what I've discovered so far.

I still plan on trying other recipes but will expect to be adding my on touches of southern flavor as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood, May 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I purchased Trisha's first cookbook "Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen", and really enjoyed it. I expected this cookbook to be just as good, but I was disappointed. I enjoyed the stories, but many of the recipes were ones I would never cook. This cookbook is kind of gourmet southern. Had I looked at this cookbook in a bookstore where I could have opened it and previewed all the recipes, I would not have purchased it, because there are not enough recipes I want to prepare to make it worth paying $17.00 for. I am still a fan of the first cookbook, though.

I am an avid cookbook reader and found this book to be not only full of delicious and easy recipes but wonderful personal stories about the origin of the recipes. I look forward to the next cookbook by these three southern ladies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes From Trisha Yearwood!, May 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood: Stories and Recipes to Share with Family and Friends (Hardcover)
I didn't have Trisha's previous cookbook because I didn't think I would care for the food. I purchased this one as a gift and of course after I thumbed through it, I had to have both cookbooks. The recipes in this cookbook are wonderful. It has pictures to go with most of the recipes, a small story about the recipe and handwritten tips as well. We've already made the "Slow-cooker Macaroni and Cheese" only in a 13x9 pan...it came out wonderful we've also tried her Cabbage Rolls, and that is a fantastic meal in itself. Give this cookbook a try you will no doubt find a recipe that will suit you and your family.

This review is from: Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood: Stories and Recipes to Share with Family and Friends (Hardcover)
Recipes all look good...I made the potato skins and they were yummy. I was sent this through my book club because I forgot to decline but I am happy that I did forget because I feel I will use it a few times! Also, Garth Brooks has a recipe in there and a foreword for his wife.
