More About the Author

Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher. Writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. She lives outside Atlanta with her husband their two little girls.

This short is set in the Downside Ghost series by Stacia Kane. Chess Putnam is a debunker for the Church of Truth. Post apocalyptic world complete with killer ghosts and the witches that can control them and keep people safe. Chess is an atypical heroine...but honestly only because she's a SHE rather than a HE. It's perfectly normal for male characters to be exceedingly flawed but less for female characters. I am a huge fan of this series because the world building is excellent and the characters are fully realized and fall into a nice spectrum of grey...no one is all good or all bad. Even the ghosts...which is part of what we see in this lovely short story. Usually the ghosts are pretty much nothing but enraged killing creatures but not always. The debunking case featured in this story shows us that sometimes the situation is different and requires a thoughtful solution. While I really enjoyed the case Chess is investigating in this story the real heart of it all is the peak into her budding relationship with Terrible. Terrible is her drug dealer's enforcer. Oh yeah...remember that "no one is all good or all bad" well Chess has a bit of a drug problem...well ok, she's just flat out a drug addict, but a functioning one. So over the course of the first three books in the series she and Terrible fall in love and being damaged people just doing the best they can to get through they stumble around a bit and have some pretty awful moments trying to figure out how love someone and be loved by someone. It's all beautifully written and exceedingly painful in places...but so, so accurate. In this story though we get the good moments.Read more ›

It`s not often one can say anything is heart-warming in this series but Home actually was. It was a short story but it had a great allegory for Chess and her desire to feel at home and safe somewhere.

I don`t need all the books in this series to be as "sweet" as this one was (and truly, it stayed well inside the boundaries the series has set) but it was nice to have this one as I`ve come to love Chess throughout the series and I really want something nice to happen for her.

Looking forward to the next book in the series!

A nice little Downside short - and a happy one at that. It had all of my favorite parts of the series with Chess on the job and some nice one on one time with Terrible without all of the angstiness of the last book (for me, Sacrificial Magic.) If you're a fan of the series and like shorts, I also really liked the prequel short Finding Magic (Novella) which is a great little story of Chess on her first job.

For a Downside Ghosts story, this is a sweet novella. There's a little something revealed about the City of Ghosts from an unexpected source during Chess's investigation. Now that Chess embraces her love for Terrible she feels a gamut of emotions (pain, fear, surprise, and happiness). It was nice to see some sunlight penetrate the darkness within her.

Memorable Quote

His arms wrapped around her. "Chessie? You right?"

She nodded, closed her eyes for a second and let it wash over her: Happiness from the drugs sliding through her veins. Happiness so bright and strong it burned her heart, because of where she was, because of who she was with. Happiness because now the empty space inside her, the space where everyone else kept love and good memories and peace, had little bit of those things inside it.

I didn't think I'd like the Downside books because I'm not generally interested in ghosts. The ghosts are just secondary though-- the real story is about the characters and the world they live in. Ms. Kane does an amazing job of world-building and character-building, plus her plots center around interesting mysteries that keep your attention and aren't full of holes.

I liked this ebook. Too short but sweet. I am hoping for a full length Chess book soon, but at least there are these ebooks for now.

I absolutely loved the first books in this series, but this one seemed less about the subject matter, and more about the
introspection of the main character. More action, and less melodrama would be good.

It's nice to read a story that holds true to the series but isn't as dark and angsty as usual. I love this short.
