What a touching story! The fact that this series is based upon actual events makes you believe that love can conquer all. Kudos to Ms. Stokes and her family for letting their story be told in such a wonderful way! Thanks!!! DON'T miss the other two books in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great beginning to the trilogy, August 18, 1999

I received all 3 books as a birthday gift & finally got around to reading them this summer. Once I started, I couldn't stop! The characters are so real & believeable that I felt like I knew them. The changes they evolve through with life's circumstances are admirable because they seem like real folks going through real trials. Loved the plot between Mabel Rae & Drew....

I have always found World War II wildly romantic. I especially enjoy reading about the love stories from that era. Maybe because they dared to look for hope and love in a horror filled time.

I really enjoyed the Faith on the Home Front series by Penelope Stokes. You will fall in love with the characters. You'll cry when their loved ones are sent to war, when the fated telegrams arrive, and when they are reunited. You'll read about amazing growth, struggles and triumph over fear. Get lost in the romance and watch the characters grow spiritually. Definitely a must read.
Don't forget to read the next two books in the trilogy.

I read this years ago when I was about 13 years old, I believe. It was a thick book with the first and second book together. I fell in love with the characters and their faith. I kept it for many years and about 5 years ago or so got water damage. I don't know what it was that brought me back to these books recently but I'm glad it did. I was scared at first not to be able to find these beloved books of my youth. But, alas, I found them. I ordered " Home Fires Burning" first, now that I finished it, I'm upset I didn't order the other two at the same time! Lol

This book for me was more than just the love story and about the kind of love I would one day hope to find. It really helped to change the way I prayed even as a teenager. I grew up going to church and understanding prayer and the need for God in your life. The only thing is that I was really told to ask God about my needs. Nowadays, I tend to tell God what I need/want and learn to let him guide me.

For so long I wanted my marriage to work and to last but I quickly realized there was no way. I prayed about it and really felt God speaking to me to let it be. I followed for a split second and was at peace, unfortunately, I went right back into a truly hellish situation. I realized I brought the suffering upon myself for not allowing God to work his wonders. In the end I prayed for wisdom and strength. I knew that my marriage failing was a necessary evil. I asked God that if my marriage was meant to last to help me find the way to mend it, and if not to help me realize it was over and to give me the strength to endure what was sure to be a heartbreaking and emotional divorce, at least for me. In the end I emerged in one piece.

I'm nowhere near perfect, noone is. I know that If I hadn't lost my way in the years when I met my ex-husband, I wouldn't have suffered so much. I should have listened to what my Heart and God were telling me and that was to walk away. I didn't. Sadly, we all learn the hard way sometimes, in the end I feel that I came out so much stronger because of it.

It's these experiences in our lives that truly turn us into who we really are, i found strength in that moment of heartache, I found God again, and faith to believe in the power of prayer. His answers may not always be what we want but I can assure they are always what we need. I never gave up on God, although I questioned him sometimes, but I must admit, " in a moment of worthlessness, I found my self worth." I couldn't have done it without God.

My point here is I love the book and the message it sends. Marriage and Divorce aren't for everyone, and I don't want anyone to think that a work of fiction pushed me to seek divorce. There was over 10 years from the time I read the book. Sadly, in my case, divorce was the only option...

I recommend this book to anyone of any age, even if the stories are predictable and too lovey dovey at times, the message is about learning to have faith in God and faith in prayer. Pray for wisdom and guidance because what we want may not always be what we need.
