5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you are looking for inspiration to begin a home sewing project, July 6, 2006
By
This review is from: Home Furnishing with Fabric (Hardcover)
A sewing novice writes this review. Thus far my sewing has been limited to home decorating. I have made curtains, roman blinds, duvets, and most recently slipcovers. I purchased this book to get additional ideas for projects around my house and was not disappointed. This book is great at supplying decorating inspiration.

The book is subdivided as follows:
Fabric Styles
.....solid colors
.....neutrals and plain weaves
.....wool and velvet
.....faux fur, suede and leather
.....checks, stripes and geometric
......the new florals
......silk and damask
.......pictorials and toiles
The components
.....Window dressings
.....Slipovers and upholstery
.....Pillows and cushions
.....Bed furnishings
.....accessories
Room by Room
.....Living rooms
.....Bedrooms
.....Kitchens and dining rooms
.....Bathrooms
.....Halls and landings
.....Outdoors
Fabric Care
Practicalities
.....Equipment and techniques
.....Unlined curtains
.....Door curtains
.....Roman shade
.....Linen bedspread
.....Chair back and tie on seat cover
.....Slipcover for a dining room chair
.....Tie on pillow covers
.....Buttoned pillow cover
.....Bed bloster
.....Drawstring bag
.....Conical lampshade
.....Fabric basket

The majority of the book is spent on covering topics and providing pictures that relate to the topics. This covers the first 150 pages of the book, and I would classify this part as more of a decorating book than a sewing book. However, the author does provide a lot of valuable information about decorating, which will have an impact on the fabrics, and designs that you will select. The remaining 50 pages of the book (the section on practicalities) covers specific how-to instructions for the projects outlined above. The directions are clearly written. Even as a novice with a sewing machine I had no problem following the directions.

The photographs in this book are lovely and provided me with many ideas for my home. I would say that the style of this book tends toward the European Country. But there are also modern interiors included as well. If you are looking for decorating ideas and instruction on how to make many of those ideas happen this is nice book to own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Home Furnishings with Fabric, January 11, 2007
The book seemed limited on ideas of how to make the home more comfortable using fabric. It did not have a broad scope of ideas or usage of fabric. It also was limited on directional how-to information.

2.0 out of 5 stars Home Furnishing with Fabric, January 9, 2007
You can find the same type of photos & information in any decorating magazine. The instructions for making the items are clear, but they did not include what I wanted.
