“On Home Ground raises contemporary questions for its young readers and does so with such skill, it achieves a success far beyond an exercise in baseball and nostalgia.”-The New York Times Book Review

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up Mark Twain once said, ``When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21 I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in 7 years.'' In essence, this is a story of a boy Aaron, albeit much younger than 14, who discovers just that. He finally realizes his father has one foot in the old country of Russia and another in the new landNew Yorkwhere he's fighting to keep his heritage. Narrating in the first person, Lelchuk has written this book in a chatty conversational style. Adults will enjoy this look back in time to the '40s when Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers were playing ball, but a limited audience of young adults will choose it for their own entertainment. Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, Va.

4.0 out of 5 stars On Home Ground, (Brooklyn Revisited), April 5, 2000

This review is from: On Home Ground (Hardcover)
A revisit to Brooklyn during the days of Jackie Robinson, PeeWee Reese and the Brooklyn Dodgers makes this book enjoyable for adolescents as well as adults. It made the readers relate to the realistic tense situations between a young boy and his immigrant father living together in a very different world then the one the father left behind. The new world is Brooklyn and anyone who has experienced Brooklyn, young or old will enjoy this book. My ten year old, baseball loving son enjoyed the story, the flavor of Brooklyn in the days of Ebbets fields, the chemistry between the young boy and his war veteran friend and the baseball scenes which bring to life The Brooklyn Dodgers.
