This attractive guide to growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs by a late Reader's Digest editor compares favorably with the National Gardening Association's Gardening ( LJ 3/1/86). Both cover their subject with clarity for beginners, but with enough detail for experienced gardeners. Home Grown is enhanced with chapters on using a greenhouse and storing and preserving the harvest. The line drawings show gardening techniques well, but are less effective than the photographs in Gardening in depicting pests and diseases. Cross-references at the bottom of many pages guide readers to other useful parts of the book (but unfortunately are in small type on a dark background).
