Robert Mitchum stars as Wade, a pompous and powerful good ol' boy who runs his small Texas town. Things aren't so good on the home front, though; his wife (Eleanor Parker) has held a grudge against him for years since he fathered a child out of wedlock. Their legitimate son (George Hamilton) has turned out to be a weakling and a disappointment to old Dad. Add to this mix the young and pretty Libby (Luana Patton), who likes both sons, and you have a great story.

Although Mitchum is wonderful, it is charismatic George Peppard, who plays the illegitimate son, who is the real star. He is handsome and appealing as a rugged man with a wise and tender heart and the camera loves him. George Hamilton is too old to play a 17-year old mama's boy, and he's stiff and awkward. Beautiful Eleanor Parker is excellent as Wade's long-suffering wife and Mitchum is, well, Mitchum, which in this case is just perfect.

This film is long and melodramatic, but it has a juicy script, likable and attractive actors, a lovely score, and all the loose ends are tied up in the end. Heartily recommended.

This is a movie that reaches to everyone. It deals with pride and a misunderstanding of people. It deals with love, heartache, sadness, and loss. Robert Mitchum is the man who lives with a wife who could not be with him because of his bastard son, played by George Peppard. Their own son, played by George Hamilton, is weak and soon has a hatred for marriage because of his parents. The only one with a heart is George Peppard. Everyone soon comes to understand one another, but sadly it is too late. This movie is an excellent one for people who would just like an old story about the reality of life.

Years ago this film was featured on HBO, for several months, and I loved it immediately. In fact, I have borrowed the name Raph(spelled by us as Raphe) as my son's middle name. Not as he can be a little bastard, but because Raph was the most endearing, faithful, courageous, trustworthy charactor in the movie, despite having suffered more than any other. Since I have bought "Home from the Hill" thru amazon.com. I was suprised to find that my 5 yr old son and my wife also enjoyed "Home" the first time they saw it.

The story is based on a novel by William Humphrey, under the same title. I have not read the book, but once you see the movie you will understand why I would want to.

This book is for many audiences, including romance seekers, fans of classic greek tragedy, and outdoors sportsmen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

This wonderfully acted movie, is a must see. George Hamilton gives an outstanding performance. I never realized what a talented actor he is, until I saw this movie. Robt. Mitchum always the best.

This is the story of a Texas family torn apart by bitterness, adultery.

After watching the movie, now I want to read the novel.

I SAW HOME FROM THE HILL WHEN I WAS IN 9TH GRADE AND IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS HAVE SEEN IT MAYBE 10 MORE TIMES. IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES, NOT AS GOOD AS THE BOOK, BUT WHAT MOVIE IS. AFTER READING THE OTHER REVIEWS I AGREE PRETTY MUCH WITH ALL OF THEM BUT THINK BOB MITCHUM MOST CERTAINLY WAS AS STRONG IF NOT A STRONGER CHARACTER THAN GEORGE PEPPARD. WHAT IS SAD IS THAT LUANA PATTON, A FORMER DISNEY CHILD STAR AND A VERY SWEET PERSON IN REAL LIFE NEVER MADE MANY MORE MOVIES AND DIED ENTIRELY TOO YOUNG. SHE WAS WONDERFUL. ANYWAY, THE MOVIE IS WORTH WATCHING, THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THAT ANYMORE

I love this movie! I loved it so much, I bought the book -- believe me, the movie is better! This is the first time I remember seeing George Peppard in anything. He played Rafe, the illegitimate son, and for me, he was the best! George Hamilton was good as the brooding, mixed-up Theron. If you like steamy dramas, this is the movie for you.

And I disagree with JT Boyd's review, partly because it is inaccurate. Robert Mitchum's character had an affair with a tramp, producing illegitimate son, George Peppard, which caused his estrangement from his wife, Eleanor Parker, who was the mother of his legitimate son, George Hamilton. I do think that Hamilton's part was way overplayed, but liked the movie, regardless, and George Peppard surely got my attention.

Home from the Hill is a story of how one secret can ruin your life and the lives of everyone whom it touches. The lead roles are wonderfully acted by Robert Mitchum and Eleanor Parker. Robert Mitchum has two sons,one played by George Peppard is illegitimate and the other played by George Hamilton is the naive son from his marriage. The story could have been a complete tragedy but kindness for the most unexpected person can sometimes be what is needed to turn the wrongs in life to rights. Beautifully filmed and beautifully acted, Home from the Hill is a treasure not to be missed.

My parents enjoyed this movie enough that they named me (their daughter of 23 years) after George Hamilton's character, Theron. I love the movie too! It's a good one.

I saw Home from the hill on tv, late one night uncut. I must say I watched it because I was and am a Bob Mitchum fan and ended up being a George Peppard fan. The movie is a soapy drama with lots of plot and will hold your interest. But for a truely great performance look to the Late and I say it "Great" Peppard who out Mitchum's Mitchum, he is a pleasure to see as the strong put opon bastard son and half brother to George Hamilton. This movie should have made Peppard as big if not bigger than Paul Newman. Don't miss seeing it.
