4.0 out of 5 stars A small window into an intriguing life April 3, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Like most I would imagine, I picked this book up due to its connection to the film `Home for the Holidays.' Though the book and story the film is based on bare little resemblance to the film itself, it is still a highly enjoyable read.

Radant narrates for us on a journey of non-linear biographical stories that span her lifetime. Her dry self deprecating down to earth sense of humor mixes well with the comedy and tragedy of life that any one of us can relate to. I found myself laughing out loud and even tearing up at moments in this entertaining, though unfortunately small collection of stories.

Unconventional, sarcastic and witty, Radant is the type of individual I'd like to know in person, and thanks to this small glimpse into her life I feel I do, if even just a little.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit uneven November 29, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Like the first reviewer, I picked up the book because of its connection to the film. (Very clever, putting Holly Hunter on the cover!). I was a bit disappointed in the first half of the book. The essays are very short and many resemble journal entries. One story in "Home for the Holidays" inspired the Hollywood film, and while I was surprised at how much it did NOT resemble the screenplay--many strong characters were added by the screenwriters--it stands on its own very well. Radant's small nuances add much flavor and color, particularly to her portrayal of her parents, who loom large in this story collection. Her description of her involvement with the actual HFTF film was short and unsatisfying (except for its final note regarding crew members). I thought the book ended strongly with two essays about relationships and motherhood. (I would have deleted some of the earlier ones, however.)
