Book Description

April 12, 2005
Middle class moms and dads have long sought safety for their children in the nurturing haven of the cul-de-sac. Like a safe harbor at the edge of an angry sea, the suburban neighborhood is an environment of protection from the world and all its dangers. Or is it? In Home Invasion, Rebecca Hagelin proves that in today's all-consuming culture of corruption there is nowhere left to hide-American homes have already been invaded by this insidious enemy that seeks to twist our minds and poison our hearts through the unmonitored Internet, television, magazines, and music that our families ingest on a daily basis. Speaking as a nationally known social commentator and as a mother of three, Hagelin shows through specific examples and alarming statistics how the enemy has infected the family van, our neighborhood schools and textbooks, the stores in which we shop, and even the churches in which we worship. With warm words of encouragement and practical suggestions, she coaches parents on how to arm themselves with information, strategically plan the movements of their family members, secure allies in the battle, and most of all, muster the guts and the resolve to lead their families to victory against the great beast.

Rebecca Hagelin has championed the pro-family message in both Washington and around the nation for some 25 years, educating parents and civic organizations on how to understand the media culture and its affect on families. She is the President and CEO of Rebecca Hagelin Communications and Marketing, LLC. Her company specializes in talk radio ad buys, comprehensive communications, public relations and marketing services, as well as education on the media industry. Hagelin is also the Senior Communications Fellow at The Heritage Foundation. Her weekly column for The Washington Times, "How To Save Your Family" appears on Mondays in both the online and print editions of the paper. She also writes a weekly column that explores social and cultural issues for Townhall.com, PatriotPost.US, Crosswalk and other Web sites and newspapers around the country.

She is the author of the acclaimed book, Home Invasion: Protecting Your Family in a Culture That's Gone Stark Raving Mad, published in 2005 by Thomas Nelson, and 30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family which quickly became both an Amazon and Washington Post best seller when it was released by Regnery Publishing in April of 2009. She speaks around the nation to civic, educational, business and religious organizations about the critical role active parenting plays in helping children dissect and challenge the damaging messages of the pop culture.

Hagelin served as Heritage's Vice President of Communications and Marketing from 2002-2008 where she expanded the organization's communications, public relations and marketing practices into a 21st century media world where blogs and Web sites compete internationally with traditional newspapers, magazines, radio and television in a constant 24-hour news cycle. Hagelin also employed modern marketing techniques in her information strategies, making the Heritage "brand" recognizable and successful in specific target audiences that include the media; civic, government and educational leaders; and conservatives around the world. Hagelin is the executive producer of Heritage's first high-definition broadcast quality documentary entitled, "33 Minutes: Protecting America in the New Missile Age" and is the architect of Heritage's 2008 national radio campaign with Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham and the 2009 partnership with Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

Hagelin has more than 20 years of experience in developing and executing comprehensive public affairs and marketing strategies. In the 1990s, she began a consulting business where her clients included numerous non-profits, elected officials and businesses. She has also served as vice president of communications for WorldNetDaily.com, a "fiercely independent" news site that specializes in the investigative reporting of government waste, fraud and abuse. She joined the company in 1998 as communications director and was promoted to vice president after only six months because of her outstanding work product and strategies.

Hagelin began her career in 1983 as public relations director for the Center for Judicial Studies and Benchmark magazine. In 1986, she joined the national management team of Concerned Women for America as director of communications and oversaw the development of the organization's first national PR efforts, trained volunteers and spokespeople in public relations techniques, and served as one of the organization's primary spokespersons.

In 2006, Concerned Women for America named her one of the nation's "Top Ten Evangelical Women," and in 2007 the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute named Hagelin one of the 12 "Great American Conservative Women." She serves on the board of directors/advisors for many family related organizations and is active in her church. She is also a senior editor of Salvo magazine, a new publication that challenges young adults to think critically about the destructive/false messages of today's culture.

She has been a commentator for Salem Radio Network and a guest co-host of "Point of View" as well as a guest host for Washington, DC's 630 WMAL radio, an ABC affiliate. She is the author of numerous articles published nationally and is a veteran of hundreds of radio, television, newspaper, and magazine interviews, including numerous appearances on every major television network.

Hagelin is a 1983 cum laude graduate of Troy University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast/Journalism and a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences. In high school, she hosted her own daily radio show on a 100,000 watt radio station in Florida. She attended college on a full scholarship, hosted a weekly college television show, and was a member of seven honor and leadership societies. In 1995, she was named Troy University's "Outstanding Alumnus in Public Relations" by the School of Journalism. Rebecca and her husband, Andy, have two sons (who are both Eagle Scouts) and a daughter. They live in Arlington, Va.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!, April 15, 2005

This review is from: Home Invasion: Protecting Your Family in a Culture that's Gone Stark Raving Mad (Hardcover)
Someone at work once said "I may as well buy my kids "Grand Theft Auto" because they'll just sneak around and play it at their friend's houses anyway." I said "yes, but they'll be sneaking, they'll know they're sneaking, and they'll know they're sneaking because you don't approve of it and that it's wrong." People need to take responsibility and tell their children what is right and wrong, otherwise they won't know.
I was already following the advice in this great book, if society wants to corrupt my kids with "cultural terrorism" they'll have to get through me to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all those involved in a child's upbringing, April 12, 2005

Rebecca Hagelin's new book outlines how all parents should run their households. In today's society our children are over-exposed to adult situations and Hagelin's book gives brilliant suggestions on how to put an immediate stop to this exposure. All parents, expectant parents, child-care providers and even grandparents should take time to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide To Raising Teens, August 2, 2005
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Home Invasion: Protecting Your Family in a Culture that's Gone Stark Raving Mad (Hardcover)
Home Invasion is one of the most thought provoking books on our culture war. Rebecca Hagelin basically lays it all out in sometimes frank language on the pressures facing our teens via the media and culture. She is not promoting 100% sheltering rather getting lazy parents motivated in standing up for what is truly good for our kids.

First of all, let me say that some people who have bashed this book have been very unfair and probably did not really read the book. This woman is not talking about sheltering or locking up your kids at all. Period. In fact, she encourages letting go of your kids and building trust and privileges. She stresses kids need to know right from wrong and to have limits. Go, go back and read this book cover to cover.

It is true that kids and teens are not allowed to grow up on their own. The current pop culture wants kids to learn about all kinds of sexuality at a very young age and they want them to look adult by 10! Ms. Hagelin points out many ways she has had to explain things to her kids that they really aren't ready for. Many of her examples are eye openers. What she points out in this book makes sense and if we parents don't take a stand now, the future of our country values is in grave danger.

There have been many books written on the current culture war and many want to draw a line along party lines. Ms. Hagelin makes no secrets as to how she votes however, she points out that there are many "family values Democrats" out there and this book should not offend those of another party. She truly believes that all parents, regardless of political party, race or religion should get involved on the family side of the culture war.

This is one of the best books currently out about how to fight the culture war for your family. A must buy!
