4.0 out of 5 stars Practical, indispensable--keep all your notes in one place
The perfect housewarming gift! Has a place for all the notes you ought to keep about what you bought (like appliances), what color paint you used, what repairs you've done, etc., etc. All the stuff that normally gets lost can go in this one journal, and what a blessing when you need to find those notes! Flexible enough to work for any size/type of home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy Notebook for Things to Remember
There is nothing in this book that you couldn't keep track of yourself in a spiral-bound notebook; however, if you're a first time homeowner, it can be a helpful reminder of what you need to keep track of. It's a book designed to be written in, scribbled over, and used often. It is not a reference book. It prompts you to record information: For example, what was the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Build your own owner's manual, June 17, 2000

This review is from: The Home Owner's Journal, Third Edition (Spiral-bound)
This is my third copy of _The Home Owner's Journal_. In each case, for each house, I filled the book with information that would help me know what I did: what paint color I chose, how much paint I bought & how much I used, who wallpapered the dining room with how much paper. When I sold each house, I left the book on the kitchen counter for the new owners' use. I have given the book as a housewarming gift. The best part about it is the book is unpretentious. Because of its casual format and comical illustrations, it's easy to mark up, daub with paint and paste sample rug and wallpaper swatches inside, and the messier it becomes, the more useful and valuable it grows. I recommend it to any new homeowner!

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful information right at your finger tips!, March 4, 2002
By A Customer
Maintaining a home can be a daunting task, but this book will make it easier by providing you with just the tool to keep important information right at your fingertips. And the spiral bound book is easy to use because the book stays open to the page you are on! Each page will guide the homeowner to record things such as window measurements, floor coverings, and wall coverings for each room in the house. And it doesn't stop there. It also takes you outside to record important landscaping projects that you may have completed too! So, let's say you were moving furniture in your bedroom and dinged one wall? You don't want to paint the entire room, but can't remember what color or type of paint you used. Just turn to page 28 of your Journal where you will find not only what kind of paint you used, but a paint sample as well. This will certainly take the guess work right out of those small touch up jobs! This book is a perfect gift for new homeowners. And for those existing homeowners like myself who would just like to get more organized!

There is nothing in this book that you couldn't keep track of yourself in a spiral-bound notebook; however, if you're a first time homeowner, it can be a helpful reminder of what you need to keep track of. It's a book designed to be written in, scribbled over, and used often. It is not a reference book. It prompts you to record information: For example, what was the brand name & color of the paint I used in the master bedroom, and how many cans did I use the last time I painted it? When did I last change the filter on the heater? What make & model are my major appliances, and what phone #s do I call for service? etc. I got this book as a gift, and while it can be a pain on occasion to fill out, I'm sure having all this info handy will be extremely valuable going forward, and a "nice to have" for any future people who own the house after me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Journal, August 18, 2001

Although this book is not much more than a spiral notebook for you to keep records, it may prompt you to record information that you normaly wouldn't think to do. This is a great guide for someone who wants to keep excelent records on their house. I know that I wouldn't have the discipline to write all this information in a notebook (one that wouldn't get lost that is) without such a helpful guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift, November 22, 2000

This review is from: The Home Owner's Journal, Third Edition (Spiral-bound)
The book provides a journal of all your home improvements as well as tips on which repairs are tax deductible. There's a chapter for every room in the house where you can record dates for repairs, put sample paint/wall paper samples, list manufactures of appliances or rugs, and other assorted details. What's great about this is that you have all the documentation you need in one place if you ever need to track down who made that wallpaper or bathroom tile. It's also great for reselling the house because you can give the new property owners a book that details all the work done on the house over your history with it as well as the samples in case they need it in the future!

Simple gift, but the folks I've given it to have loved it. Perfect house warming gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cost savings and convenience, February 26, 2002

My husband and I LOVE our journal. We use it each time we complete a home project. It is so easy to find the perfect matching paint when we need to do touch ups. I know it will save us a great deal when we sell our house, as we can deduct many of the home improvements. My friends and family have come to expect receiving this gift when they move to a new home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for new home buyers or the truly disorganized., January 12, 2002
By

I bought this journal and promptly returned it. It might be useful for people who don't know what information is important, and for people who don't keep records at all. However, most people who aren't good at keeping records probably won't use this journal as it was intended anyway. It is also useful for people who are buying new homes or townhomes - since so much of the space is devoted to things like what type of flooring or kitchen cabinets was installed and when. Those of us who are buying older homes won't be able to fill in most of the information unless we are doing a complete renovation. There were a few useful bits of information, but not enough to justify the cost of the journal. Most people would be better off saving their money and keeping their own records in a simple file or notebook.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Totally Worthwhile Investment, February 20, 2009
I can't imagin not having this little book! If I need to know how old the dishwasher is or when I last painted the bedroom or when we had the roof replaced, I've got all the information in one place. The last copy I bought of this book was for my mother. She was thrilled down to her toenails! She said that before now she has had to go pawing through her file drawers to find the information that she can now keep at her fingertips.
