Gorgeous on the inside... a real inspiration.,
By E. Miller "lainy1976" (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Home Photography: Inspiration On your Doorstep (Paperback)
This book is humble and gorgeous and accessible and really, really astounding. His photos are beautiful and all taken in and around his home. Patterns and shapes, a close-up photo of a fork with its tines curled, gentle portraits of friends who have stopped by to visit the author at his home... wonderful stuff. This is not a technical book so much as it is a book that helps you to rediscover ways of seeing - especially, new ways of looking at the things around you as something worth inspiring your photography. You can't help but read this and want to start shooting at home.

Only for the "fine art" photographer - then it is great,

This review is from: Home Photography: Inspiration On your Doorstep (Paperback)
The star rating is an average - this is either a one star book (for most photographers) or a 5 star one (for great fine art photographers seeking some inspiration). If you are looking for a book to help you take better pictures in general, pictures of your family and home life, or have never worked in a darkroom dodging an enlargement, this is NOT the book for you! Do not let the "Home Photography" title make you think the book has anything to do with home life or "regular" photographers (99.99% of people who operate a camera).
BUT if you want to take very artistic Black and White photos with your Medium Format camera, maybe using non-standard photographic emulsions and gum printing to achieve the artistic effects you want - but are stuck at home and are wondering what to photograph? Then this is the book for you, a 5 star review - it shows you how you can take anything (ie bend up a fork) and the pictures of it are just as artistic as any other object. Now it doesn't actually show or tell how to take the pictures - you are required to already have all the photographic knowledge to take artistic gallery-ready pictures - but shows via examples that if you can take artistic pictures already, there is no need to leave your home to take those pictures and your gallery show will be just as good as if you have traveled. If this paragraph or the very concept of "gum printing" is new or confusing in any way, this is NOT the book for you (there are many better); if this review makes you think I don't understand real fine art photography and am just quoting from the book at random then you might want to give it a try. Pretty pictures, but nothing I will ever make in my lifetime.

Inspirational Book,
By Clara (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Home Photography: Inspiration On your Doorstep (Paperback)
This book is a revelation. Andrew Sanderson is a great communicator and could be in the room with you when he describes how to make great images from everyday objects. This is not a how-to book, rather as others have mentioned, it is inspirational and would be a boon to people on a low travel budget or handicapped photographers for whom getting out is problematical. What I like is Andrew's down-to-earth language, the book is worth buying for the text alone. The black & white pictures look as if they come from another era but it only takes a small adjustment of the imagination to adapt to one's own style of photography.
I liked this so much that I immediately bought a copy for my daughter-in-law.

I liked this book. It will give you lots of ideas for some home photography. The photos are artsy and in black and white. All of them appear to have been made with very basic equiptment and with available light. They do not appear glamouous or have that pro look, so just about anyone with a camera could duplicate the author's work. The text does not reasonably explain how the photos were taken and no technical information is given, however, most shots are reproducable with some very basic knowledge of photography. I am sure the book can give anyone some good ideas. I would have liked to see some color. But maybe it's in his next assignment.

Inspirational book. Andrew Sanderson has a great eye for the unconventional viewpoint. He seems able to grab frames on film at the most precise, balanced moment.

I keep Home Photography as a reference book, when I am inside or outside my home, during the seasons of the year. There's always a new perspective to be seen from inside your home, and Home Photography allows my photography skill to be challenged and made better.Home Photography: Inspiration on Your Doorstep

This book really is an inspiration, full of beautiful photos of everyday items and found scenes taken around the author's house. What a refreshing change from the usual photography book! Its not technical in nature and Mr. Sanderson's approach is that whatever you own is good enough to take great pictures with. You don't need the latest gear and you don't need photoshop. Some of his best work was taken using a paper negative.
The photographs inside and the author's approach will inspire you to get out your camera and get to work.

By Seashores (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews

After reading this book, my photos of friends and family have improved dramatically! Pets, too. I have become much more creative and have tried many more techniques. I also find I am thinking more creativly. Since my photos are much better, I am taking a lot more pictures; quality pictures. My family is happy with the results, too.

There are a lot of books like this. They present different vision of different people. It is always helpful to learn something from someone else, especially if this person is professional. So if you are interesting to get one more opinion how to be creative in making photos, it makes sense to buy and read it. Other books to consider for reading in the same direction will be "Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography or Photography and the Art of Seeing" by Freeman Patterson or "A Visual Perception Workshop for Film and Digital Photography" by Bryan Peterson.
