A friend of mine asked me to recommend some Bonnie Raitt albums-of course I like them all-but this is one of three or four I felt are most fully realized in terms of group cohesion, balance of songs selected etc.
Bonnie, Freebo and the gang are wonderful at making you laugh and especially at creating that blue mood: Songs like First Night Alone Without You and Run Like A Thief have me sniffling just at their mention!
That said, it comes through the music that the band was in full-throttle boogie with this effort. If I didn't know better I would have said Bonnie was in love around the time this album was created. A most worthy addition to your listening pleasure.

Well, that was just one word that came to mind. Of all Bonnie's albums, and there are plenty now, I come back to this one time after time. Songs like "Good Enough" and "Walk Out the Front Door" are definitely groovy enough to make you want to dress up in something from the seventies and dance rather embarrassingly. Just remember to tone it down for some of Bonnie's most aching ballads, like the impossibly perfect "Run Like a Thief", and the sumptuous, almost Streisand-esque "My First Night Alone Without You". "I'm Blowin' Away" is another one. It's hard to choose a favourite, but they all have that ability to tug on you and make you part of the song. I defy anyone not to sing along to just about every track, right up to the simple bar-room singalong of "Sweet and Shiny Eyes", the perfect ending to one of my favourite albums of all time.

I have loved Bonnie Raitt for decades, and I have most of her albums. This one may be the best - because each song is not only a wonderfully written piece of music, but it is performed & recorded beautifully - especially great considering this was made in the mid-70's. Several poignant ballads ( I'm Blowing Away is one), and a number of hot blues tunes too make it a good mixture as well.....Grab it - you won't regret it, I know!

I bought this cd because a friend sang "Bright and Shiny Eyes" to me and I loved it. The whole cd is great, soulful, fun. I play "Bright and Shiny Eyes" incessantly--it is wistful and would make anyone nostalgic for their own long-gone days.

Bonnie Raitt's HOME PLATE is a record with plenty of MUSCLE! From "Walk Out the Front Door" to "Sugar Mama," Bonnie knows how to really throw it down. She can break your heart, too. "Blowin' Away" is sweet and beautifully, plaintively arranged. Sometimes, Bonnie throws it down AND breaks your heart in the same stroke. "Pleasin' Each Other" will make your toes curl and the hair on your neck rise...Total goose flesh.

Along with people like the Allman Brothers Bonnie Raitt and her band managed to mingle blues,singer-songwriter pop and southern rock stylings into a brew that is strong and funky. The vital rock n' soul that this album provided is part of a string of albums from early in Raitt's career that set the tone for what she'd accomplish a decade and a half later. "What Do You Want The Boy To Do?" and "Good Enough" set the tone for this album from a woman deeply inspired for a woman who admittedly was hugely inspired by Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Acoustically textured guitars, keyboards and a strong rhythm section to render really emotionally vital music. "Fool Yourself","Walk Out The Fron Door" and "Sugar Mama" let the funk roll out and really showcase how inseperable the funk and blues really are with Bonnie throwing in some wonderful Muddy Waters/John Lee Hooker flavored electrified blues guitar. The presense of members of Little Feat and future Toto member Jeff Porcoro in her band only add to the great sense of rhythm the music provides. Other songs such as "Run Like A Thief","My First Night Alone Without Upi","Pleasin' Eachother","I'm Blowin' Away" and "Your Sweet And Shiny Eyes" all fall into the singer-songwriter/country-soul ballad vein that actually blends very well into the funkiness of the uptempo tunes. This is part of a hefty handfull of albums all working within this style Bonnie Raitt released during the 70's and is easily a high water mark in a career that already had many up to this point.

This was the album that got me thru all the broken love affairs of my youth. Broke my first copy and bought another that day. Now I don't have a record player and must have the CD. My favorite of all her brilliant albums

Consistently good. That sums up Bonnie Raitt's albums for me. Actually, some are better than plain good, bordering on outstanding, but at least you can always rest assured that her albums will be of consistently good quality ... and "Home Plate" is no exception. Listen to those first two tracks ("What Do You Want the Boy to Do" and "Good Enough"), take a deep breath and smile: yes, the lady delivers in the clutch again. Typical Bonnie Raitt: bluesy and soulful tunes mixed with rockers and sweet, melodic ballads. And she performs her usual magic on the guitar to up the "wow" factor. What more can she do? This album does indeed cover all the bases. "Home Plate" may not be Bonnie's MVP album, but the batting average here is very high!
